Hello,

Not been on for ages, but wondering what’s happening with the frame rate? My gaming laptop has a great processor and an RTX3080 but I am getting much lower frame rates than on my older laptop. For context I can get around 100fps on LOTRO on max settings but only 30 ish here on medium settings.

The best graphics card in the world will not help you if you have an Intel processor that does not have a lot of single core output. This is an old game with an even older engine that has never been overhauled to work with modern day multi-core processing architecture, a 64-bit client or even up-to-date DirectX integration.

The only thing that will help you with getting higher and more consistent fps is to lower your graphics settings especially on the shadow and character rendering front or to buy an AMD Ryzen processor that can handle single core stress much better.

As said above, SWTOR puts a lot of stress on the CPU. SWTOR also likes fast single-thread performance - preferably a CPU with a 3.5GHz+ speed.

Your laptop may have a relatively low speed CPU and/or it's cooling system may be throttling performance.

When playing SWTOR, run the laptop off the mains power supply and set Windows to "high performance".

I have the same problem... most gaming laptops trade fast CPUs for slightly slower CPUs that take less power but have 6 cores vs 4 so they are actually more efficient when running most modern programs that can utilize all the cores. Like Minecraft for Java this game is old and only runs on one core (i think) so you need to go and edit your power settings and add a profile for no limits on throttle so all CPU cores will be running (for me) 3600mhz which will be close to max load at all times, watch your temps don't let it get above 90c ideally. I have a RTX2070 and i7-9750H -6 core @2.6ghz but I overclock it all the time and keep it at 80c-85c under load.

Thanks everyone, unless my memory is fading, I played on the same processor last year and it was a lot better. Even on medium settings it isn't great. I would have thought if LotRO can update to 64bit and better DX, EA could and it is a slightly newer game. For reference this is my processor Intel® Core i7-10870H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz

Tenth-gen Intel CPUs are good. I use an i9-10980XE ("high end desktop") CPU, and it goes like greased owl-sith, even if most of the cores are idle while playing SWTOR. (I can get it to almost 50% usage when gaming, but only in Horizon Zero Dawn.)

However, one important question comes into my head... Are you 137% sure that SWTOR is actually using that RTX3080 for SWTOR? Be careful of it really using the embedded sub-GPU ("Intel UHD") inside the CPU, because that will severely wound your performance.

EDIT: my 10980XE drives an RTX 2080Ti, and at the worst possible case (Warzones) gets mid 50s FPS driving "Ultra" level SWTOR graphics into a 4K (3840x2160) screen. In ordinary play, it gets about three times that.

Good shout. Why these things have two cards I don't know. It seams to be in Nvidia settings.

The RTX saps battery life like it's going out of style if you run with that on battery, so laptop makers usually fit laptop CPUs that (a) draw less power than desktop CPUs(1) and (b) have Intel HD or UHD or Iris graphics or the AMD equivalents on the CPU. Those draw lots and lots less power than the RTX, but they are glacially slow by comparison.

EDIT: clarification: on battery, the OS prefers to use the UHD graphics to preserve the battery, but when the machine is plugged in, the OS might (depending on settings and stuff) prefer the "external" card because there's plenty of power available. Watch out for low-power-supplied USB-C chargers that can't supply the full power requirements of the RTX.

(1) My 10980XE draws up to 165 watts on stock clocks, whereas your CPU draws up to 45 watts. That sort of "less power".

EDIT 2: Thanks for letting us know that you've found a solution...
