LeggoMyMuoio
So I have a lvl 26 Bounty Hunter and am loving the game so far, but one thing I found myself doing was catering my conversation responses to what I thought Mako would like. Before she became my companion, I was pretty brutal with my decisions but ever since she joined, I sometimes find myself getting soft in order to see that little "+15" pop up. So my question is, is there any real advantage to getting companion affection up or should I just make the decisions I want to and not worry about how Mako feels about me? If there is a point of affection, I find that it being linked to my decisions kind of hinders how I'd like my character to be.
reillan
There is a benefit, but conversations aren't the only way to raise your rep. You can also get companion gifts from your mission crafting and give those to her. The benefit is that you'll get additional quests later on. These quests can seriously help when you get to the 38-40 range and find yourself running out of quests. Is it any real surprise, though, when a girl makes ya hold back and not say what you were going to say? hehe
Bibdy
Higher affection will speed up their trade skill mission timers, and improve their chance of a critical success (e.g. return from the mission with purple loot, or craft an augmented version of the item you told them to make). Affection can be raised fairly easily with Gifts, provided you give them the types of gifts they like. Personally, I like trying to figure out which dialogue options my companion will like. It makes the deliberation a lot more interesting than just role-playing a douchebag (3333333) or a super nice guy (11111111).
OlBuzzard
hmmm sounds like I need to learn more about "skill missions" and "mission crafting". What are they? Where are they found .. It looks like more good stuff to make the game more interesting ! (I'm enjoying the game a lot thus far !)
McVade
So I have a lvl 26 Bounty Hunter and am loving the game so far, but one thing I found myself doing was catering my conversation responses to what I thought Mako would like. Before she became my companion, I was pretty brutal with my decisions but ever since she joined, I sometimes find myself getting soft in order to see that little "+15" pop up. So my question is, is there any real advantage to getting companion affection up or should I just make the decisions I want to and not worry about how Mako feels about me? If there is a point of affection, I find that it being linked to my decisions kind of hinders how I'd like my character to be. The bonus for affection is only in crafting and it's so minimal that I wouldn't worry about it. Like every 750 affection knocks a few seconds off a crafting time, so like, having 10000 and 0 is like a 1 minute difference. Considering at 32, some missions/stuff take 30m or more, it's trivial. As to the issue of a character cramping your style, I think that's basically immersion in my book. If you like your companion and you're asking yourself: "I kinda wanna do this, but I know she wouldn't approve, so I'll do that"... it's not a problem at all. My Bounty Hunter began a sort of credit-seeking *******, but when Mako joined him, I found myself more and more taking the lighter path. I found she kinda changed his personality, and I was making light side/honorable choices even with other companions who didn't approve of them. I've noticed this changes depending on what character I play. On my Sith Warrior, for example, I couldn't care less what Vette wants... and if she complains, I shock her. He's just a totally corrupt bastard and sort of relishes in it. His logic is: "you WILL make yourself useful to me, and if you don't, I'll be the first to stick a lightsaber in you." As such, her affection can drop to -10000 for all I care. Edited December 30, 2011 by McVade
Your_Ad_Here
Also .. little trick I do. You can back out of a conversation before it ends with ESC. That way, you can see if your companion actually gets anything. Remember, the numbers don't tally up until you fully complete the mission.

It looks like more good stuff to make the game more interesting ! (I'm enjoying the game a lot thus far !) What's usually called crafting in MMOs is called Crew Skills in this game (explained here http://www.swtor.com/info/systems/crew-skills). You can send your companion to gather materials, complete a mission or create an item depend on the skills you decide to take. Apparently greater affection on the part of your companion will increase the chances that they could gather a rare material or craft a more powerful item. Only of interest if you're into crafting.
