Authenticator

er...what?

I mean, so I tried to think up an analogy for you, to show you how ridiculous your assumption that just because your computer is worth thousands means its secure is, but I couldn't really.

Brain fart.

Anyway um...its because...its like a key...to play swtor...and you can buy a dongle too I believe, its like 5 bucks. Which I'm sure you can afford, since you have a multiple thousand dollar computer.

You don't...put your key in your car, cause...that does nothing?

Does that makes sense? I dunno, i'm struggling with an analogy here lol.

Having remote security is just that. Remote. Away from your machine. It's made to be on your person and separate from whatever you're trying to secure. If someone manages to keylog your machine, they'd have both logins. If your machine is lost or stolen, they could have both. Not having a separate key kinda makes it all moot. Edited by AnotherRoad

A good analogy is, "Do you keep your house keys in the keyhole of your front door?" or Where a t-shirt that says my Bank account number is so and so and here's my SS. **** like that.

I work in IT security and although having the authenticator on your PC (which would be easy for them to do) would add a level of security, the best security is by having the authenticator be on a separate device that you have to have in order to login. This way, in order to login to your account you have to know your password, plus you have to have a separate device that provides you with your passcode. This type of authentication is very secure and drastically reduces the likelihood of unauthorized access to your account and also prevents someone that has access to your computer (locally or via hacking) and who knows your password from being able to log in.

It is likely because of the reasons above that BioWare/EA does not produce a PC version of the authenticator software.

Am I the only one that thinks security should be part of the package when you buy software for an mmo these days? And not just the $150 package, either.

I could understand having to buy an authenticator separately when hacking became a serious issue a few years ago. Prior to that, it hadn't been such a widespread problem, but now it really should be the responsibility of the publisher to choose and implement a means of protection for their customers up front and at the point of initial purchase.

It's ridiculous to make it an optional separate fee.

Wow. I've been curious about this for a long time and was really afraid to ask because of exactly what happened. Thanks again to the intelligent answers. I asked an honest question. I wasn't trolling or bragging about my computer. I'm not a cheapskate or too broke to buy an authenticator. I just wanted to know why if there are apps and I have one on my computer for another purpose why I would need to buy or get another device. I got my answer and everything else I need to know about the community here. I remember why I never hang out in this forums.

They have passwords and in SWTOR security questions when you're logging on from a new location. Authenticators are free, assuming you have a smart phone, and many people don't actually purchase hardcopies of the game anymore to put authenticators in even if they wanted to. How do you propose they secure everyone's account?

You might want to go back and read the first two lines of your post and then ask yourself, again, why people responded the way they did. :p

I would propose they bundle an authenticator into any hard copies they sell and ship you one if you buy via digital download. Other games ask you to select a numeric code (the method I've seen used requires a ten digit code) and you plug it in on log in, every time.

(I've never been prompted with any of the questions I was asked to answer when I originally signed up for SWTOR.)

By providing free authenticators to everyone. He's right. If they are in such fear of this happening, it kinda should be their responsibility. My WoW acct has been hack a couple of times but only after I stopped using it and let it sit idle for years. All my other games seem to be fine, but I'd be sad otherwise. Guess I will go pick an authenticator up, now that the internets is scaring me.

OP: Two-factor authentication is common where extra security is needed. For instance, I have a VPN (virtual private network) set up to work remotely. A simple login and password isn't that secure, since there is a lot of valuable data on the work network. So, I'm provided with a key fob that produces a random number that can only be seen if I am in possession of the fob. Thus, my password AND the 2nd key are needed to obtain access. It adds another level of security-you can have the login and password, but without the fob you can't get in. Edited by Bamajawn

Nothing wrong with the questions I asked unless you assume I'm trolling or some entitled douche bag out of the box. Sorry I didn't put the appropriate smiley to set my tone. They were plain honest questions that didn't deserve the response. But whatever. I'm a big boy. I should be surprised or disappointed by the childish responses I get. Well actually I will continue to be disappointed, as I am with a lot of things in the world. But shame on me for being surprised.
