Hey guys, just grinded my way to lev 70 through story mode and drive yards, fps, etc. Any recommendations on how to start aiming for better armour, or where I would start to get on the right path for upgrading my toon? Currently playing a sniper

The grind continues in the form of "Galactic Command" Everything you do in end game will provide "Command Experience" (CXP):

  • story chapters (only KOTFE and KOTET)
  • heroics (soloable but intended for groups of 2 or more)
  • flashpoints (originally designed for groups, but there are "Story Mode" versions that can be soloed)
  • uprisings (new group content, designed for groups, do not know if they can be soloed at all)
  • operations (large group content [8 or 16 players], CANNOT be soloed)
  • PvP (unranked and ranked)
  • Galactic Star Fighter; GSF (has its own "gearing" system; gear on your character has no impact on star fighter performance)

With each "Command Level" (roughly 30000CXP to start (goes up to about 5000CXP at level 300)), you are rewarded a "Command Crate". That crate will have three or four items in it. EVERY command crate is supposed to have a piece of gear that can be an improvement to the gear you have (some have reported this not to be 100% true; they have opened crates and not gotten stat gear). Other items within the crates can be:

  • companion gifts - items that generate influence rank for a companion
  • crew skills schematics - these are bound to legacy, so they are not sellable but can be transferred to other characters of yours on the server
  • armor shells - armor that is moddable but it empty (mainly for appearance)
  • Jawa Scrap - tokens used to purchase crew skills materials for crafting

NOTE: even if yo do get an piece of gear that has stats, it might not be useful (because you already got an upgrade in that slot). For example: I have gotten three of the same legs pieces. The best I could do with them was use the mods and enhancements, not a bad use of what I got but not perfect either.

The gear you get is random BUT based on the discipline you use. As a pure DPS Sniper this is of little concern. This concerns characters who can tank or DPS, or heal or DPS. If the player wants that character to be able to do both then they need two sets of gear which is VERY hard to accomplish in a RNG gearing system

As has been mentioned, the Galactic Command system is the main way to gear up now. It is a unified system for everyone to obtain end game gear while doing the activities they want to do. At level 70, you start gaining command experience (CXP) similar to how you'd gain normal experience (XP) while leveling. Each command level you gain gives you a command crate with gear and other items. The default key is Ctrl+G to open the GC window.

As people said at level 70 you can only get gear from the Galactic Command system. What sucks is the set-bonus, I have for example decided to start the scoundrel, yet i realized that i dont have the setbonus on him. Sure I can craft him 240 stuff but no set bonus, not even from the past (as i havent played him) so that will really take long to get the set bonus, just like you, on the new character.
