is this a scam?

this is happened to me twice and i ignored it, assuming it was a scam but thought i'd check.

So i got this whisper in the game with the message, if you are a subscriber and go through my link i'll give you 3million credits, you will get 500 cartel coins and 7 extra days of subscription.

Didn't want to take a chance it was a scam but two different people have sent this to me now.

It's not a scam, but be wary. There are a lot of players who do not pay up. For such ridiculous amounts ask for references from others, if they can't give them ... you know they won't pay up or are less likely to pay.

And if you would have clicked one and they haven't paid, simply contact Customer Service and have them remove the click the link action. It will not negatively affect you, but the one who scammed you will lose their ref link click.

You'd only get 7 days added to your subscription and some unlocks you probably don't need.

500 CC thing is just to make you think you get more even though you get it anyway from your own subscription.

Thank you, I went ahead and clicked yours I didn't need the 3 million credits anyway. I'm assuming you can only do it once? Anyway thanks for clearing that up for me Happy New Year

In a way, it is a scam, albeit one that Bioware allows to happen. Basically, the reference link is meant to reward players who successfully got other players to subscribe to the game, and when the latter click on the former's reference link, both get some rewards, but the one whose link is clicked gets more, since he's supposed to have helped to grow the game's subscribers.

What you see instead, are players who do not get people to subscribe to the game, but rather, chase after those who have already subscribed to click on their reference link, pretending to Bioware that they've recruited that new player into the game to subscribe.

The person whose reference link you clicked didn't recruit you to the game, but is getting rewarded as if he did.

I still don't know why Bioware lets active subscribers click on referral links.

It's not a scam but, as other people have pointed out, many people don't pay. Also, the owner of the link gets free cartel coins every month you remain a subscriber. If you're already subscribing to the game, why would you want to give a random stranger free coins every month?

Isnt it considered now as an exploit? I saw that information in someone's signature yesterday : "Removing my friend referral link because apparently—according to the ToS department and a rude customer service representative—it is exploiting the friend referral system and that all accounts advertising their referral link in their forum signature will be investigated as well."

I would certainly hope that Bioware sees this as an exploit and put a stop to it. But based on the proliferation of people here putting their reference link in their signature, I can only assume that Bioware is looking the other way.

I wouldn't necessarily call it "pretending to Bioware that they've recruited a new player into the game to subscribe." Unless, Bioware really don't know about people doing this, I doubt it, because surely they'd fix it, so subs aren't getting rewarded for having other subs click on their links.

Personally, I don't have an issue with it, I have clicked on them before, and I've payed people 1 mill to click on mine. I've even been able to start up a decent long convo after someone clicked on my link, about the cute pets that subs are rewarded with, and RP stuff.

While most people might say the rewards for clicking on a link is useless, or some such, I tend to disagree. I actually like the fact that I now can unlock my inventory for free, thus creating more space on any new characters that I make. Sure, it's only one extra bar, but it just means I can start saving my credits longer.

Regarding Referral Links in your signature, this has been answered before:

Hey everyone,

I wanted to let you know that as a part of today's maintenance, we made a change to how referral links work. Now, when you click on someone's referral link, it will prompt you with a confirmation dialog before accepting the referral. This was implemented to help stop any potential "griefing" that could occur from folks spamming their referral links.

In lieu of this change we are going to be lifting some of our forum restrictions around referral links. You are once again allowed to place your referral links in your signatures. However, keep in mind that if you are found to be "spamming" your link around the forums, you can still be actioned. Any type of link spam is not permitted and this includes your referral.

Thank you everyone for your patience as we worked through this. Let me know if you have any questions.

I guess some people just like to be nice to others, random strangers or not!

I would if I didn't have a friend in game who I clicked the link for and was just playing on my own - because it's nice to be nice!

The point isn't about whether it is beneficial for you to misuse the referral scheme. Of course it is beneficial for you, since you're getting rewarded for not doing the work of actually recruiting someone to subscribe. The issue is whether such actions are abusing the scheme.

Yes, given the proliferation of such links in signatures, I gathered as much. It still doesn't change the fact that these people are conniving to get rewarded for not actually doing the work of recruiting someone to subscribe. I take a dim view of such actions, and, but extension, the people who perpetuate it.

With all due respect....

You may want to click on the Dev Tracker link at the upper left of the forums, find Eric's profile and send him a PM asking for a clarification. The forums are pretty much player driven with little staff interaction. And considering this topic concerns forum moderation, you're not going to get an answer here.

Not trying to tick you off or anything like that. If you feel strongly about this, take it up with a Community Manager. That's what they're paid for anyway.

I still feel most of the clicks on my link are from spammers trying to look legit. You should see the names on my list....

I personally never advertise on chat in game. I do however post it in my signature because it has been allowed by Bioware.

I think yes, it should be considered an exploit if people offer money for clicking the link, because it defeats its purpose. There are even people that ask for 3 million credits so that the one who pays for it can click their link! ***! They won't give their link unless they pay.

I still don't see it as "abusing the system." I don't consider myself a "gamer," nor do any of my friends. So, in this instance, my referral will go unused. It's open, to interpretation, whether it's considered a "Scam," I choose not to think of it as such, but more as a social cue. I've helped complete newbies out, and ppl only just returning after a four year absence. You only receive the rewards if they (are) subscribe, anyhow.

I think, in my opinion, it is only a scam if ppl abuse their link, and spam gen chat. Then I would be inclined to call ppl out, on it. If this happens, then you can just put them on ignore, or even report them, assuming they are really spamming their link every 10 minutes.

If someone posts their referral link, in gen chat once every 30 minutes, I don't think it could hardly be called spamming. But, I've started to bleed into a whole other topic, of discussion so Imma gonna finish. :p
