If you want a name that's taken you can open up a ticket and ask about it. Generally speaking if the owner of said name has been absent a long time (multiple years usually) or is a very low level they'll grant it to you and flag them for a rename.

As to whether or they decide to grant the rename ultimately depends on the person answering the ticket, I don't know if you can really blame the company as a whole. It sounds like you got pretty bad luck.

Ethics are astounding.. they should make a few buck on that transaction as well and start charging people... he with the most $$$ gets the name... Just Sad

It's standard fare actually, I have had the same request filled for me when I played WoW and also ff14.

MMO players are fickle, how they supposed to know if you're coming back?

Most MMOs do a name purge after awhile. I also know that when SWTOR did theirs they did send out notifications via email because a friend of mine received the email and logged in to specifically keep her character names even though she had no intention of ever playing again.

But as has been mentioned, your best bet is submitting a ticket.

The OP may also, if he was gone long enough, have been munched by a server merge.

The other scenario is that he got munched by the (one, single, not-yet-repeated) name purge. It only affected characters belonging to non-subscribers (but even then, only if they were below level 30).

On reflection, however, I'd say it is more likely that it was a server merge.

If I had a name that someone else wanted, I'd probably be willing to do a rename to free up the one they want, as long as they covered the cost. There's nothing wrong with asking politely, just in case. Of course, if all else fails, you can use special characters in your name so that it looks almost identical.
