Commando Returning Player: Confused on what adv. class to spec into

I played in the first 3 months of the released game as a CM and got to level cap (50) and did a few HM ops. The game has changed in the two years since I've played it. The utility tree options look interesting and there is plenty of information on builds for CM at 65. My question is this: Should I try to play as a pve Combat Medic from my current level to cap or go DPS? There seems to be mix feeling about CM in flash-points and ops. As I remember they have great burst single target heals but I don't know if that is the case anymore. I'm also worried that single player pve content will be much slower as a CM than say a gunnery? Keep in mind that the only gear I have is focused on healing but I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Cheers for any help\advice!

I leveled as a healer. Though now that companions are more powerful you could level as dps and have your companion heal.

Keep in mind that operations are now the premier way to power-level. And they boost you up to 65 stats (approximately).

They don't anymore.

The old position was :

Small heal = cooldown unless you popped Supercharge

Large heal = no cooldown

That allowed you to go nuts with burst healing because the only limit was your resources when spamming the big heal.

That was scrapped

Now what you have is:

Small heal became the big heal = cooldown unless you pop Supercharge (now called Supercharged Cell)

Large heal became the small heal = no cooldown

As a result burst healing is heavily tied to the duration of Supercharge and not your resources now.
