CrazyCT Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I've been thinking if upgrading my rig (there's a smell of caramelising dust coming from it lately if I turn the graphics on full) and I was wondering.....would you buy a computer at half price if it meant you had to watch a 30 second advert before loading a program? (and there's no cheating by hacking or un/re-installing the OS) As you go on, you can pay extra to shorten the adverts or decrease the frequency till you've paid off the rest of the computer.
Pagy Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 um...what? this sounds like a scam, or adware...why not just get a job and save some money?
CrazyCT Posted November 27, 2015 Author Posted November 27, 2015 Been trying to get a job since I was made redundant 6 months ago, but thanks for your support
Zorbiax Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 (there's a smell of caramelising dust coming from it lately if I turn the graphics on full) Sounds to me like you need to clean it out pretty urgently...
Astaldoath Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 (edited) id buy it and reinstall windows.... not that hard, they cannot stop you from uninstalling the OS, all you have to do is physically swap hard drives so yes i would, if its in your contract no seeing as you can build a pc for like 300-500 bucks max Edited November 27, 2015 by Astaldoath
LadyVix Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Would I? Nope. I upgrade my system to allow me to work faster. To shave a few seconds off my launch times. A 30 second advert totally destroys the need for such an upgraded system. If your current system is dying and you need something to carry you through hard times, this may be a temporary solution, but certainly not a permanent one.

Can you give me a link, cause I would buy that computer. Also, how come you haven't use an air duster to clean the dust out of your vents?
CrazyCT Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 It's not a computer I saw or anything, just hypothesising.
tmwfte Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 No. Don't give Microsoft any more ideas. They've already applied a similar technique to the Solitaire suite in Windows 10.
MadDutchman Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 probably, since it would be simple for me to burn it off the machine. On the other hand, probably not since I just buy my computers outright, compared to tuition a computer is cheap.

Then middle school came and I started building them.
Holocron Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 It's not a computer I saw or anything, just hypothesising. If you are thinking of it as a potential business plan, then I would skip it. It was done before in the late 90's, and early 2000's. This was still the time of $1,000+ anemic beige box computers. There were a few companies that would sell you a computer for $400 if you were okay with it being ad supported, and some were even giving them away free with more aggressive ads tactics. Those companies eventually folded because the business model was unsustainable. In today's environment it would be virtually impossible, especially considering how tech savvy even the average user is, and with how fierce the competition in the tech segment has become. Back then people didn't really know how to build their own computers, let alone had any idea of how to mess with the code. Competent, computer literate people were on the far fringe during that time period. The only way to try an attempt this business model today, would be to have a custom made computer. Meaning a custom pcb with all the chips soldiered to the board etc. Plus you would likely need potential hardware locks, locked OS and BIOS. Of course all of this can be circumvented in one way or another, but good luck.
CrazyCT Posted November 29, 2015 Author Posted November 29, 2015 People are thinking this through too much - It was supposed to simply be a poll to see if people would or not. It's not something that I've seen or was planning to do, was just a bit of philosophising a hypothetical. I thought I'd covered it with the "no cheating by hacking or re/uninstalling the OS" clause. Still, it did show me how you guys think, instead of just debating whether or not it you would, you all seem to be looking for ways to get the computer, then cheat your way out of following through with the contract. If only I was doing some kind of Social Science degree that I could use this for a study in the human psyche or something.
