idnewton Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) After innumerable conversations in SWTOR chat, I've decided to finally compile a list of the various cliché chat techniques I've noticed. I may have left out a few, so I'll probably be adding to this list over time. The referencing of these clichés is best accompanied by the classic CinemaSins "DING!" DISCLAIMER: THIS THREAD DOES NOT -- AND WILL NOT -- CALL OUT ANY PLAYER FROM ANYWHERE, INCLUDING (BUT NOT LIMITED TO) FORUMS, IN-GAME CLIENT, 3RD PARTY WEBSITES, 3RD PARTY VOICE CHAT PROGRAMS, ETC. I INTEND TO UPDATE THIS LIST AS I SEE FIT, WHICH NECESSITATES A COMPLETE LACK OF FORUM POLICY VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE THREAD, AS TOPICAL AS YOU MAY CLAIM THEM TO BE. I WILL NOT HAVE THIS THREAD CLOSED DUE TO CALLOUTS OR INSULTS. LET'S KEEP THIS CIVIL AND LIGHTHEARTED. Without further ado, let's get to it. Preventative Accusation Cliché: Troll accuses others of being trolls so that any claims of trolling against the actual troll can be dismissed as a recycling of responses. [anticipatory Tu Quoque] Faux Conclusion Cliché: Pretending to be outside of (or finished with) a conversation one is still a part of. (ei: *waits two minutes* "wow you're still talking?") [Proving Too Much] Mom Cliché: Referencing a person's mother in some (usually obscene) way to win cheap support from the dull masses. [Red Herring: Ad Hominem / Genetic] Brawn Cliché: Acting on the notion that an intellectual conversation not pertaining to a specific player's skill can somehow be solved with the person parsing or dueling. [ignoratio Elenchi] Canned Response Cliché: Using a heavily overused response where it does not make sense, in the hopes that the dull masses recognize the response and assume it does make sense (ie: Arguer 1: "I don't care about your valor level, we're discussing player skill which is unrelated to valor level." Random person: "Well if you don't care, then why are you responding?") [Proof by Assertion] and, in the case of the example, [Composition] and [Contextomy] Fallacy Cliché: Resorting to the use of a logical fallacy to support one's point. These are generally just referred to by the name of the fallacy committed. A whole lot of these other clichés are also logical fallacies, but this category belongs to those fallacies which don't fall under the definition of any other cliché. [varies] A common example of this would be using valor level / ranked rating / highest parse / ops progression / gear to try to support a point about the mathematical advantage of a change in gear [Appeal to Accomplishment] Pseudo-Accommodation Cliché: Pretend defeat/guilt to escape the conversation. ("Yup you're right, I'm terrible, I'm a scrub, you're the best") Failure Cliché: When a person, especially one who has initiated the argument, ignores another person on insufficient grounds (because they're wrong, embarrassed, offended, confused, angered, etc., rather than a legitimate reason like excessive spam of chat messages or group/guild invites). Rage-Whisper Cliché: Usually several minutes after the conversation is over, the person will send an angry PM usually followed by an ignore to prevent the other from responding. Last Resort Cliché: The person pretends to go crazy, posting random comments, often spamming, and usually committing logical fallacies out the wazoo. There's a common, two-word term for this which I'm not confident is forum-appropriate. The first word is "full" -- I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Edited November 16, 2015 by idnewton
DomiSotto Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) There is that, and the rest is the male SGR erotica obsession. Edited November 16, 2015 by DomiSotto
