Thedroth Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I really don't get Bioware. Most people say, "The expenses are not worth it; there's no profit in it for them; content is more important for them than localization". Well, nobody is making Bioware do the translation on their own! Just sell access to the game or simply TAKE OUR MONEY and give us the access - it will sell like hot cakes to Russian localizers and they will do all the work! All Bioware needs to do for localizing is to take our money. Even regular users contact support saying, "Let me russianize it, open the game, please!" but no. I have a feeling they hate Russians and don't want to translate the game into Russian on principle and don't let others translate it either because thanks to even a modest russianizer the game will acquire tons of new subscribers - don't they need the money? Anyhow, it's BS. They can't do that. Thank you, I had my say.

Varkiriel Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Unfortunately, they might have decided that due to sanctions by the US government, that it's not worth the risk.
Thedroth Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Unfortunately, they might have decided that due to sanctions by the US government, that it's not worth the risk. I don't think so, look at the World of warcraft for example. But anyway BW/EA didn't want to translate the game long before sanctions.
Varkiriel Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 True, no attempt to go for the Asian market with korean/japanese/chinese translations. Shame really.

Sometimes it's a matter of the "big suits" being afraid of spending the money to do the localizations, whether in Russion, Greek, Chinese, etc. They fear not getting a return for their investment. Hmmph!! Cowards! Edited November 12, 2015 by WorldSmasher

What makes you think they are specifically excluding Russians? It's not the only significant language that's missing a localization. It's not even the largest one. Mandarin, Hindi and Arabic all have a larger number of native speakers, yet the game isn't localized for them either.
havikoro Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) Why don't they just learn the language? Not a big deal. I wish there were no German and French language packs at all. It splits up the community too much. Edited November 12, 2015 by havikoro
Stradlin Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) Besides valid reasons already pointed out, I can easily imagine EA, like many other Western cops, feels the idea of investing heavily on Russian market makes a huge risk. Russian's hostile foreign policy, their thoroughly worshipped God Emperor ruler, sanctions and all the resulting uncertainty makes Russia a very bad and risky place for any kind of investments at all. Additionally, SW:TOR features an opportunity for homosexual relationships. There are laws in place against " Gay Propaganda" in Russia. Which means products like SW:TOR localized to Russian language would be in front row of things to ban, whenever Putin decides it is time to make " examples" about Russian purity, western decadence or how manly, brave and cool tom of Russia he is. Considering how nationalistic and authoritarian things in Russia are getting, I'm pretty surprised if they don't go after Western video games/popular culture big time soon enough. Why play a localized game created in corrupt, decadent West when one can play a proper, pure Russian game with intact and appropriate values behind it. Rabenschwinge Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I've once heard an interview with a manager of Valve about Steam and the Russian market. He said that when they chose to go to Russia with steam a lot of people tried to discourage them, but by now Russian language products are they second bigest non-English European market. A bit strange formulation, it means it's their biggest market in Europe after English and German and provides no comparison to, say, Korean... but it does mean among other things that Valve makes more money with Russian stuff then with French.
Varkiriel Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 It might simply be down to whether they beleieve they will get an adequate return on their investment over another opportunity. Even companies like EA do not have bottomlerss pockets. So maybe they choose to invest in another braindead sports franchise, because it will earn more money than SWTOR would.
