Suraknar Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Greetings, Recently returned to this game, I had followed it during its development and tried it on Open Beta but never bought it at release, the game was too similar to WoW and I just had enough of WoW at the time and Themepark games all together. And well it was nothing like Star Wars Galaxies which I loved playing for years (before they screwed it). Anyways, long story short, with nothing Sandboxy to play and all the good ones under development (Crowfall, Camelot etc), some of my guildmates and I decided to give SWTOR a fresh look. So far I am Enjoying the game this time around, there have been some interesting additions but it feels a bit overwhelming at times for new comers as there is much information to absorb., I started as a Jedi Knight and went down the Guardian Path and I have been trying to understand the core differences between the three Specs of the Guardian. I first chose Defence but reading skills descriptions etc I did not like the apparent fact that it is very weak offensively and does no damage. it looks like Defence is mainly for PVE. So can someone please just explain in practical terms what the differences in role and situations are between the specs? It is not clear from the Web site or in Game information what Focus does versus Vigilance. Very vague descriptions. Or at least point me to a good informational guide. I am thinking of re rolling to a Sentinel instead...but I would rather get more information about the Guardian first. I am trying to find the best spec to my style of play: Role Play - PvpEr mainly. If that means anything to anyone I can describe a bit my style form WoW. I used to play Survival Hunter in WoW, Reached Grand Marshal in Vanilla. I prefer PvP more than PVE but I do like to explore the Raids and instances to complete them at least once for the sake of curiosity and fun with friiends. But, I dislike with a passion running raids and Instances for gear over and over again, I consider this mind numbing mechanics, repetition & monotonous in that context is simply demotivating and not fun. So I stick to PvP as the main fun source, battle grounds etc. And of course a good discussion about Realm affairs in the local tavern along with good company and lots of drinks. (In this case it would be galactic affairs in a good Cantina) My Secondary classes were Druid and Paladin as favourite and I have Tanking and Healing experience as well. Yet I like dynamic fast pace combat like a dance, and the Hunter was best suited for that. (I do not like playing Rogue) What class in SWTOR would approach that best from the Jedi classes? Thanks!
Beynor Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Well my main is a Sith Juggernaut, they can tank pretty well, they're dps is pretty decent, they have specs for each, the mirror for them is Jedi Guardian
Suraknar Posted November 11, 2015 Author Posted November 11, 2015 Thank you. I am basically trying to understand the difference between the three specialisations. It seems like all Guardians or Juggernauts are a Tank Class. Defence seems to be more of a PVE spec Vigilance seems to be preferred for PVP How about Focus? What is its role? I am sorry I do not know the equivalents for the Empire side yet.

Defense = Tank Vigilance = Sustained / AOE DPS / Single Target DPS Focus = Burst / Single Target DPS All 3 are viable for PVP in their respective roles, the first 2 are viable for endgame PVE with a soft viability on the third (but there's no reason to run it), and all 3 are viable for leveling / solo "PVE"

And that actually answers the question I see Defence more for PVE because it has many abilities which deal with Threat and that (normally) has no effect in PVP. Albeit I can understand that it has other uses in PVP, holding it ground creating choke points permitting others to finish the job, mitigate damage to the group etc. I will need to try out both Vigilance and Focus and decide which fits my style best. I am going to also make a Sentinel and compare too. I am reading the guides also in the Sentinel forums, it looks like it would fit my style, medium armor DPS oriented. Thanks again, its much more clear now on the Guardian Edited November 11, 2015 by Suraknar clarification
