runar_smugler Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Hi guys, Been back in SWTOR for a few weeks and having toons of fun. Finished with the story and it was COOL:) After I reached 65 and got the story line finished I have been mainly doing group finder hardmode tactical, flashpoints and one raid...(damn those raids dont pop too often:() I did one of these alliance thing quests and I was ehh...well...that was kinda booring. Finding the freeman or whatever you called him was fun..but done that too... So... What do I miss out on when not playing the alliance thing? I have not done any of those quests and have not done the space station flashpoints?.... Are there story mode in that alliance thing? Are there more of my former crew member there? I have only found the ship droid..thats all...
Songano Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 It is just an endless grind to get back companions who you already had in the past... I dont want to get back old companions, they dont speak to you anyway and every companion is as effective as the other one.
BrianDavion Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 It is just an endless grind to get back companions who you already had in the past... I dont want to get back old companions, they dont speak to you anyway and every companion is as effective as the other one. it's not a grind, you get to SKIP the grind if you already had em. the Alliance system is fun but not essential. you can skip it if you like. that said, it's always nice to have lots of companions!
runar_smugler Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 ahh oki..its part of the getting companions back?...oki maybe I do it then....
TX_Angel Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 it's always nice to have lots of companions! Why? They are all the same now. You only really need 1...
Asheris Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Why? They are all the same now. You only really need 1... You never know if they won't contribute to something in the future. Better do it now than have even more unlocking to do in the future
Jedi_riches Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 We won't really know until we see future chapters as to what extent alliance members affect game play.
TX_Angel Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 We won't really know until we see future chapters as to what extent alliance members affect game play. Do you honestly think they'll tie major story in the future to what you might or might not do in alliances? "Choices that matter", except, none do... seriously, look at KotFE with some open eyes. Fun story, nice journey, but it is completely fixed in what happens, nothing you do matters or changes anything. The companions you can recruit or kill right now, can't be part of future chapters, since that would require heavy branching of the story, and they clearly aren't going that direction. Alliance is just a grind, busywork, nothing more or less. If you enjoy it, do it, but it won't matter for the coming story.
runar_smugler Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 I guess there will be a small story interaction when you meet them and get them back...and I'm cool with story:) So i guess I should do them.... As companions per say I dont care to much..but I AM sick of running around with female companions wearing clothes....I cant wait for the patch where LANA can dress in a stripper bikini. Damn I wish that I could play the whole bounty hunter story from level 1 (boosted to 60 with him)...but I dont want to run around without the 6 abbilities i use now in my rotation....
Songano Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 The only thing one could miss (if not collecting old companions) is endcontent of another expansion after KOTFE where you need to get back your companions a second time. Yeah, im bored...subs runs out in two days...
Jedi_riches Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Do you honestly think they'll tie major story in the future to what you might or might not do in alliances? I was thinking more along the lines that later on there may be "missions" that can be completed by alliance members think of the Warrior during Taris where toward the end your companions are sent off on missions to help your goal, if you have x companion they can do the mission if not you must complete it. or, for example having companion y brings in some additional reinforcements at the last minute to give a number advantage during a crucial battle. They might not be huge differences but subtle differences on play styles.

We are not discussing choices here - just what could alliance companions do in the future. Useful does not have to mean part of the story. There can be a mechanic introduced that will require certain companions, maybe it will give a bonus to something, maybe you will need, let's say, 3 "doctor" companions (Lokin, Doc and Tharan for example) to do an alert mission or something. We don't know it but why not do it now to save time later?
Mikahrone Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 (edited) Why? They are all the same now. You only really need 1... You only need 1 armor set, buy one from lvl 7 vendor and youre done. Also the appearance tabs are pure nonsense, you only really just need 1. Also, 1 speeder. You only really need 1. 1 rifle. 1 blaster.... .... .... Its mostly optional system. You get a set of main characters and followers. Edited November 10, 2015 by Mikahrone
Uruare Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 (edited) Hi guys, Been back in SWTOR for a few weeks and having toons of fun. I have only found the ship droid..thats all... It's hard to guess that just yet, actually. Just now, there are a bunch of companions to get by doing it, though they don't seem to be essential to anything... yet. Maybe not ever. You can get a lot of crystals by building rep with your Alliance leaders, which is handy for getting more and better gear. In order to access heroic star fortresses, you have to do the gearing up mission chains for each contact, which is necessary if you want to do heroic star fortresses... But not seemingly at all if you're fine with skipping those. Can't speak for what the future might hold with these things, but right now, they seem entirely optional, and class crew hasn't seemed to be attached to the alliance grind at all yet. It could wind up being in the future though. If it were me, I'd at least chip away at it just in case. Hope that helps! Edited November 10, 2015 by Uruare
PlacidDragon Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I dont think you really miss out on anything by not doing it. With this new system, i sort of worry that at any time, companions might be taken away for "story reasons", which makes gift investment a risky venture...
runar_smugler Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 But as you guys say:) its part of the "story" about getting companions back....and while I dont need or even care about my companions..I like the storytelling in swtor and will play this:) But it is good to know that it is not essential to do the allianse system for "progression"... I do gear up nicely with the hardmode tactical, flashpoints and story mode ops...
