madclawwookie Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I finally got to start gathering companions in the new expansion and just found out that in order to get one of the companions you have to do warzones or have so much valor, (which you get from warzones). Seriously why? There are many people, including myself, who don't enjoy the pvp warzones in the game. If getting the character, (won't say the name for spoiling) isn't important to the story then that is fine but if getting will drastically alter the story I think that this is not proper. Yes you can bypass this buy having the class that the companion comes from but there are some who don't play that class for one reason or another. Am I wrong in thinking this?
GythralSWTOR Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Those that had 1 of the 2 (1 per faction) companions need only talk to them, for the rest yes PvP is needed, but given how they are listed, they are probably 1 grind you do not need! (both PvP matches and the influence) Not that I think PvP should be required for anything but 'fluff', EA obviously thought this was a fast fix to the PvP queues!
Animenia Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Of the current available companions you can recruit for your Alliance there are two that works this way. One of them requires you to have previously done PvP to recruit him quickly. If you haven't you will need to do some warzones for the quest. The other one works the other way around, "forcing" you to either to farm a specific type of monster or hunt world bosses (PvE). As far as I know neither of these two companions has any major impact on your Alliance and can be skipped (?)
Ahrngrim Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 You can get them with the right Class without pvp/ valor and for this two you get the achievments then too, so I don't think you need them story wise.

One thing is here ro keep in mind, you need four of the old Comps to get to one other, for the both pvps it seems getting the quest counts, I am not sure how that is with the trophy Hunter.
NikSunrider Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 There is another companion that requires 20 rakghoul Worldboss/Operation kills, OR 800 biochem rank 8 mats. There is a companion that requires you to kill ludicrous amounts of world bosses, another companion requires you to have either Legacy Level 40 + 1mil credits OR $20 you are willing to spend. Other companions cost upwards of 10mil+ or require you to gamble on the cartel market. Another companion requires you to do an intergalactic scavenger hunt and do a hardmode flashpoint. Others still require you to do boring questlines on 6 planets and do 6 flashpoints on top of that, while another two have you running around old planets killing things and clicking items. Oh, also! Each companion now has an influence cap of 250,000, which will cost you 4.645mil each, or a whopping 120million if you want to max influence with all of them. And your 4 contacts require you to spend either 16 THOUSAND basic commendations, OR do 320 heroic missions. How is that, for unfairness, if you are not a space-oil magnate, master craftsman, big game hunter or an epic hero from the beyond? What if I detest operations, flashpoints and world bosses, do not have the time to spend ~80 hours doing heroics, do not have biochem stockpiles and am too poor to afford Treek? Wouldn't that be unfair too? The bottom line is that this is a game mechanic, distributed evenly across all fields and players. And people who take issue with one part of it or another must adapt, or go bonkers over a video game. Not really the preferred out come. I understand the current atmosphere is not conducive to this, but please try to consider other players and see if they are in your plight.' P.S. For the record: I am a PVPer who, by some miracle, has obtained all the comps. Not all of them are at max influence, of course, but I do have them clogging up my crafting list.
Icestar Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I do not mind that some companions require PvP. We do not have to get them all.
SteveTheCynic Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Troopers get M1-4X with just a conversation, because he was formerly one of their companions. (In my case, I also had him at 10,000 affection before 4.0, but I don't think that matters.) He is one of very few companions who gain influence from Courting gifts. (No, in 4.0, girlfriend and boyfriend companions don't gain from these gifts.) I presume it's the same for SWs and Pierce. And the Qyzen one isn't so bad. You should be strong enough to fight the foes with the help of your existing crew. If your server is a bit heavy, take a day off and play at 3am for once. Or hunt world bosses.
JediQuaker Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 If getting the character isn't important to the story then that is fine but if getting will drastically alter the story I think that this is not proper. I don't think what companions you get affects the story in any way. I recently did the small quest to get Xalek, but at the end I didn't accept Xalek as a companion (because he's an ugly-*** freak ) . I still got the credit and rewards for doing the quest. As far as I know, there's no need to actually accept all the companions unless you are a collector.
DocDAM Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I’m pretty sure it’ll have no/minimal impact on story. Note none of these optional comps are listed as mains. There’s a reason for that. Don’t worry about it. I also have no problem with them coming up with creative requirements to recruit these comps. Makes for more interesting gameplay, and provides motivation to stretch out of your comfort zone and try new things. Totally fine with it. Got me to group for world bosses, which I’d never done before. But no, I won’t PvP. Fine by me. Have too many comps anyway.
Roanna Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 One thing to keep in mind, if you do decide to do the Warzones to get either of the 2 PvP companions, make sure to pick up the daily and weekly quests. Between rewards for running the warzones, the daily and weekly quest rewards, and the rewards for the companions quest, you will end up with enough Warzone Commendations to get a full set of the basic PvP gear. So if you find you don't mind PvP as much as you thought, you are geared to enjoy more of it.
ArictheBeard Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 There is a companion that requires you to kill ludicrous amounts of world bosses You only have to kill three world bosses to get the required influence. So... not really what I would consider ludicrous amounts.

ForceWelder Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 You know what the worse part of this is? We aren't even done with all the chapters yet. There might be even more companions with even crazier / sillier things to do to unlock them yet to be discovered.

Nah, the worse part is that the current PVP companion unlocks MAY be required for future PVP or PVE companions.
