Rogha Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I am looking to get a Surface Pro 4 but was unsure of which spec to go for. I've seen the previous threads that the game worked decently on the Pro 3, so I'm sure outside of raiding it'll be ok on the 4 with some of the graphics settings turned down. Well, hopefully ok for PvP. My question, however, is which build to get? Is it worth spending the extra $400 to upgrade from the i5 to the i7? 8gb vs. 16gb ram? I'd love to hear your experiences with this. Thanks.

bassfu Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 For the money you're looking to spend you could buy an actual gaming laptop or top of the line desktop.
WorldSmasher Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 TOR on Surface Pro 4 Why would you do that? Why? *Shakes head in sad disapproval*
Cnids Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I actually play SWTOR quite frequently on the original Surface Pro (i5 and 4gb RAM if I recall correctly) so you can definitely play it on the low end of the newer models. I usually have the graphics set to medium, and I've run the game both connected to a monitor, and just on the little screen when I'm out and about or don't feel like sitting at my desk. Like other people said though, if you're not really going to use the tablet functionality (I personally use the pressure sensitive screen for painting since I don't like to travel with my full graphics tablet) you might be better off looking at a full laptop computer in the same price range.
JoeeyyMagzz Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Why would you do that? Why? *Shakes head in sad disapproval* I'm with you. Surface's are for productivity, not gaming. You want productivity and gaming, just buy the SurfaceBook, Microsoft's brand spanking new laptop that has dedicated graphics instead of trying to rely on the CPU for graphics processing. It's also super light and thin compared to other laptops. This will handle all of your needs. TLDR; get SurfaceBook not the Surface Pro 4
Rogha Posted November 7, 2015 Author Posted November 7, 2015 (edited) Sorry, should have explained that a bit better . I'm not really getting it for gaming per se. I have a gaming rig at home plus a high end gaming laptop. However, I'm getting tired of lugging around that beast. I'm looking to get the surface for work as I need the portability. I just want to know, if I'm on the road, I can fire up TOR if I have the mind to do so. And the only problem with the surface book is the price tag Edited November 7, 2015 by Rogha

pegasussgc Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 It sounds like you have a lot of money. Instead of a surface pro you could try this: Razer Blade Even though you already have a gaming laptop, this might be worth it for the portability. You could probably even sell your gaming laptop and use this instead.
DataBeaver Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 I have an Asus Transformer Book T300LA, which is comparable to the Surface Pro (down to the detachable keyboard). It has an i7-4500U (1.80 / 2.40 GHz) and 8 GB of RAM. SW:TOR runs adequately for questing and easy group content. I get around 20 fps in outdoor areas.

thewitchdoctor Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 Yes, you can. Here is a chap on the SWTOR Reddit discussing playing SWTOR at 35k feet on an airplane with the Surface Book. https://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/comments/3qqujp/swtor_runs_well_on_a_surface_book_on_a_plane/

Unless you're playing other games that actually need all of those specs, then I'd say that it is too much hardware for SWTOR. I'm with you. Surface's are for productivity, not gaming. Sadly, SWTOR, built on heavily modified Hero engine, relies on CPU power for graphics processing. Not the built in graphics processors in newer CPU's, but the actual CPU part of the CPU. However... That price... If it's just for SWTOR, then maybe this. Yeah, it has built in dedicated graphics, but that CPU can handle SWTOR pretty well on that motherboard chipset. Plus, the price won't force you to sell off your first born to afford it. Edited November 9, 2015 by WorldSmasher

Rafaman Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Well, it works, if that is what you are asking. But I think you will be disappointed in the performance. And as others have said, unless it absolutely has to be a Surface Pro 4, there are other much better options.
Gebrakstkasten Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I just bought a SP4 from a friend: 4GB RAM, i5 version. Works great. If there is interest Ill post more.

I've got an original Surface Pro from a few years back, that was basically bought as a compact graphics tablet, and although I've played a small number of basic games on it, didn't dare to try SWTOR, but might give it a go over the holidays.
