I started one in heroic mode, realized I didn't have good enough equipment or well-influenced enough companions, and tried to go back to doing them solo mode, but when I talk to the stupid Republic lieutenant, he just says something like "you're really kicking butt" and I don't get the conversation that allows me to choose solo mode. Have I just screwed myself out of doing those anymore? I've done all six resistance missions that unlock the heroic missions - will I be able to do the solo ones once I've finished the heroics?

You can always abandon the heroic mode and then just start a new solo one ;)

As to whether you can do solo after finished the heroics I'm not sure because atm I'm also still a bit under geared/haven't bothered to find a group.

Huh. I didn't think about abandoning them. Will I have to go back and do all the planetary stuff then, do you think? I don't think it would be worth it then. I'll just have to improve some other way. Looks like all the planetary heroic 2+ missions are giving those Odessan presents now.

You don't understand. When it comes to SF, you basically have 2 quests - 1 is the one-time per character story quest that says "Destroy SF on planet X" the other is the one you take from the NPC near the entrance, it simply says "Destroy SF" . You need to cancel the second one.
