This is about strictly solo pve play, with flashpoints as a possible option.

I had it in my mind to make a Jedi Sage healer. This is the one type I have not yet played to the end game. I've not played an Inquisitor or a Consular ever.

Is there really any point to this spec at this time? I expect I will be mostly healing my companion who is set to be a tank, but in reality companions as healers works really well. Unless that gets nerfed, I can't imagine needing a healer in my roster anymore. In this case, should I just go Inquisitor and DPS spec?

On my tank type characters (Sith Warrior, Bounty Hunter, Vanguard), if I set the companion to healing mode, I'm good to go. They can keep my character up without any problem, and I can even solo a single elite without breaking a sweat. Those are not as squishy as a Consular / Inquisitor though.

Opinions?

Let me start by saying that I hate DPS, and I love healing.

I have been running as DPS and Heals in solo play to see which is better for me. I'm running with Lana Beniko influence level 35. So far, DPS is faster to play as during solo play with your companion set to either Heal or Tank, since as a Tank they self-heal a lot.

When I do my boredom [Heroic 2+] Star Fortress solo-run, I run as DPS with Lana as Heals.

When I run [Heroic 2+] Star Fortress with a guildie, I run as Heals and Lana as DPS.

In planetary Heroics, I run as DPS with Lana as Tank or Heals. It depends on if I need to position mobs a certain way to get them all AOE'd down quickly.

Overall, solo play is probably a no for healing spec, unless you REALLY want to. You will be completing stuff much slower and not really doing much work since your companion will be a work horse. If you want to send your companion to fight while you take in the sights and throw out the occasional Force Armor or Healing Trance, run as a Healer. If you want to participate in the carnage, run as a DPS.

What Joeeyy said. Healing never really was a desirable option for solo-play since it's much faster to go DPS while your companion heals (or tanks). I've been doing all of the new content on my sorc, including endless Star Fortress runs for the Fallen Knight achievement, in heal-spec because I couldn't be bothered to respec, and it just took forever.

Thanks for the advice, guys. That pretty much sums up what I was afraid of. I will level with a DPS build, and respec into healing if and when I need to.

Is the Consular storyline as bad as they say? I was looking forward to playing Republic for a bit, since I just finished completing the BH and the SW stories on Empire side. Or should I bite the bullet and go Empire again with the Inquisitor? The sorc looks pretty mean.

If you are interested in group contents, healing is really fun, especially with the current tactical FPs. Healers are in such high demand now with people quiting tactical FPs if there was not at least one healer in the group. Edited by tcgtqu

I'm a fan of the consular but it's not for everyone clearly. Pretty slow start, for one.

Any class would be better solo in a DPS build than the Heal build, especially with how OP the Heal companions are right now. TBH... I feel that healing my Tank companion to be quite tedious and a bit dull. Lightning and Madness are both relatively easy and fun to play, so it's not like DPSing is a chore like it is on some classes.

IDK what you define "PvE" as, but most connotate it with endgame group-play. Solo play is its own thing, usually. For group play (FPs and OPs), Sorc/Sage is a very strong healer (better on 1-2 targets, but still good with group healing). This thread that compares the classes has Sorc/Sage ranked as the best for 1-2 targets right now, so very valuable for group play as a "Tank / spot healer".

IMO... roll a Sorcerer, and make a Shadow later if you really want to have a Consular. The Inquisitor story is great, and is a very nice complement to the Sith Warrior story. Besides... you get to shoot lightning, rather than throw rocks. :D

Consular story isn't the greatest... but I don't think it's as bad as they say. Chapter 3 was very satisfying. I'll admit Chapter 2 was pretty dull, but it is for most classes honestly. A lot of people don't like Chapter 1... but it does fit the class, so I have no complaints.
