Poorly Thought Out Comms Process

I just got back from an overseas trip and logged into the expansion content. Grabbed my mission and landed on Rishi where I was presented with three comm boxes which I opened.

When I switched to the comms tab I realized that I was ALREADY OVER my cap already due to the conversion so the 3 boxes I just opened were wasted...

1. If you are going to put in a ridiculously low cap on weekly comms at least have the sense to put a warning that prevents players from opening boxes and wasting them the minute they log in. This was just lazy development.

2. At this point every single comm reward i get through the entire story line of the expansion until I hit 60 is going to be wasted. You really put players in a situation where they have to waste rewards for an entire expansion pack's worth of content?

This was previously discussed in these forums. You were aware that you were past the comm limit, so there's no reason why you couldn't have spent down commendations or transferred some to other characters.

While I tend to agree with you... why did you open them without looking at your current comm level?

Comm limits aren't new...

That being said, I think that for a month after launch, the total limit should have been removed outright, let people keep their old comms and earn their new comms, wasting comms sucks because the effort was put in at some point.

But you couldn't tell that if you open the box, you will be granted 99 basic comms immediately. There was simply no indication what would happen if you opened them. Me and other guildies fell for it, too. Usually, if you open a box, the content drops into your inventory from where you can then decide to use the item or not. I expected the same here. I thought: Let's see what's inside this box, because the box itself did not say: If you open me, 99 basic comms will be added to your account directly.

I filed a ticket and requested them to add a new info text to the box. The reply was: We cannot give you back the item. (Someone carefully read my message, obviously.)

A simple warning message would be enough: Are you sure you want to add 99 basic comms to your account? Y/N

Statement: Today I saw a new gun and immediately pulled the trigger. Unfortunately it was pointed at my Master at the moment. Now i have a dead Master.

Accusation: Gun manufacturers, I blame you for not alerting me that the gun can kill my master beforehand!!

Elucidation: That's right, I blame you exactly because all previous guns whose triggers i pulled were able to do the same!

The boxes should have let people collect over the cap or warned that you didn't have the room to collect them and prevented opening. Honestly I fail to see the continued reason for the cap in the first place.

If you think that is analogous then you need your logic circuits fixed.

eh, it says a container of large basic commendations, what do you expect it will be when you open it? another box that contains commendations?

Your right, what was he thinking. It is just like the last time we got almost 300 commendations for free like never.

Mockery: indeed! Like today was the first time the commendation limit was introduced!

Question: Do you ever know what the cross do?

What a bad - and absolutely not funny - attempt at (false) logics. Premise 1 is already flawed, hence every conclusion that could be drawn from your logical equation will always be faulty.

Here is why: You take a gun in your hand and immediately pulled the trigger. That means that you knew a gun and how it works before you got it in your hand.

On the other hand: You get a box in your hand saying "comm box" (or similar). There is no information on it what is inside. What do you do? You open it to see what is inside. There are 99 nice stuffz in it. Someone comes, takes these stuffz away from you and says: You are over the limit. See the difference here?

Now, if you really want to compare the gun in your example with a comm box, then the premise in the comm box example has to be adjusted to: The opener has to know what a comm box is and does. And this, as you know, was not the case. Yes, you could guess it and yes, it's not a big deal since basic comms are super easy to get now. However, the fact remains: If you get a box with a name on it that does not clearly state what is inside the box, then you have to open it in order to find out. And if you then learn that you just wasted everything inside that box without a warning, that's just wrong. As I stated before: easy fix would be a warning message "Attention: You are about to add 99 basic comms to your account. Continue? Y/N". Problem solved. No harm done to anyone who did not have this problem.

You're not serious... right?

[sarcasm]

Gee, what could possibly be inside a "Commendation container"? How could anyone know without opening it?

[/sarcasm]

Did you side with those who were "scammed" on the GTN as well? I'll reiterate the same advice I gave them: stop, read and comprehend before clicking things

Did you disable your tool tips or simply not look at them? When you mouse over the comm container you get a tip that shows "contains a large amount of basic commendations". I can't think of a much clearer indication than that.

Also, when you open the box you can simply close it without actually taking the comms out, and put it back in your storage. At least I had that option when I opened them.

If you know you are already at cap, you should have been able to avoid this outcome. At least you'll know about it now before you open them on an alt.

Next time they have a comm exchange, they need to do it differently to prevent all the whining about comm limits.

There are two options.

The first is to leave the comm vendors "as is" and tell people that they will be gone in 2 months and any "old" comms will be wiped after that time if they are not used. This will force people to have to actually earn the basic comms to upgrade instead of being able to fully equip a toon because of legacy comms.

The second, if they don't want to be mean about it, is to have a comm vendor where you have to convert your old comms into new manually. Again, have a window of a month or two and after that completely wipe the old style comms.

One huge problem with this... No matter what BW or anyone does you can't protect people from themselves. They will mistake and blame everyone else for it.

Good post Op.

I too was over the 1000 basic comm limit at start of expansion. I too opened a box and lost those comms. Also, true, I earned zero basics throughout the whole expansion until I hit 60. Oh well, I could of spent them, but I didn't know what on. It would of been nice to been able to invest in 60 gear prior to reaching level 60.

The majority of toons I've run up to 60 have been over the comm limit. When I hit 60, I was able to get a complete gear set. I didn't miss any of the comms I didn't get.

One toon was too far below the limit and didn't reach the 1k cap, but I also didn't open comm boxes I knew I wouldn't need until I was 60 and actually needed them.

In other words, if you are over the 1k cap you don't need the comms you didn't get. If you are under and you reach the cap you still won't need the comms you don't get. And if you opened your boxes before reaching 60 I have to wonder why.

Instead of complaining, how about being thankful that you aren't sitting on 2k Classic comms that you don't have anything useful to get with them?

1. There were forum posts, it's listed in the patch notes, and there was a comms conversion for the last expansion as well.

2. You can spend the comms you are over in the fleet on 172 mods, or other gear.

The only one who put you in a situation where your comms are wasted is you.

You are the reason they feel the need to put warning labels on everything. You are also the person that thinks McDonalds should be sued for not telling people their coffee is hot correct? You rushed in and started clicking crap without first checking to see what anything was and then come here to complain? I needed the laugh before bed thank you!

I think the OP would have been better served, arguing the point of not been advised of the new comms limit.

It's unfortunate that you lost the free comms but let's be honest:

1. You knew that it was commendations inside the box. It says so unless you disabled your tooltips, in which case, you would have voided your "warranty" :D

2. Notwithstanding #1 above, you should only have lost 99 (1 box) of commendations because it would advise you that you have breached the comms limit! Unless you disabled tooltips?

3. The boxes look like comms so at the very least you would have thought you got 3 comms.

At no point at all would a reasonable person believe that you were not aware that those boxes were comms themselves or would grant you a certain amount of comms.

And if you disabled your tooltips, which is the only logical assumption here, then your suggestion is paradoxical.

When you log in and you are ALREADY over your comm limit of 1000 there is NO tooltip. I do not have that disabled and not one of the several characters I have had any indicator that they were over the limit I simply knew I was over due to checking my comms before the expansion. OP said that he was already over the limit hence would have no knowledge that the tooltip is setup like crap and doesn't warn you after opening one box that you are approaching or have already exceeded the limit.

When you are over 1000 comms there is no warning as you earn comms that you can't get because of the way they setup the system, it simply says nothing about you exceeding or getting close to exceeding the limit.

ONLY when you dip below 1000 does the tooltip kick back in warning you as you approach 1k or exceed it.

I don't know if the boxes let you close them or not I have 3 and am too close to my limit to open them and now thanks to this thread know there are 90+ comms in there so I can plan accordingly when to open them.

I don't think it was poorly thought out. They thought enough to put the coms in boxes knowing most people would have at least one character over the limit. I think they assumed players would see "large box of coms" and at least check their coms to see if they should wait. At some point players need to accept some level of responsibility. I had 1672 basic coms on my main, I decided to save them for 60 because I didn't need anything else. I decided having enough for a full set of 186s at 60 would be preferable than trying to avoid "wasting" coms while leveling.

I agree that a message saying you are over the limit would be nice. As it goes now, you get a message saying you received a basic com, but if you look at your coms, the number never goes up. That being said, I would like a toggle to turn off all those messages. I hate it popping with every com I go over 900...I get it, I'm close-ish to the limit...

Also, the box can be closed if you have auto loot turned off. You get a loot window showing what rewards are inside. I was able to let everyone in my guild know the boxes had 99 coms, and to wait to 60 to use them to avoid wasting coms.

So let me get this straight: you were careless and did not pay closer attention to refresh where you were at on commendations, and then want to blame Bioware for having a low cap when you lost your Commendations from the box? Seems to me like you're lacking a bit of personal responsibility here...
