Assassin or Marauder?

I have been away from the game for a long time... long long time. Before I left I had a Jugg, but I am looking for something new. I have been reading up on the class changes, but being that I am not familiar with the Assassin or Marauder, I really do not know what it all means. I played enough of the two that I know that I like both play styles. I think I really just want to play the class that has the highest DPS ceiling at endgame. So... hows it looking for Maras and Sins? What do you think will be the better class after 3.0?

I am at 47.89% downloaded.... 47.90.... 47.91

A lot of people seem unhappy with the changes done to Marauders in 3.0. The assassin side of things doesn't seem that bad. I think you'd have a better answer in the class forums than general discussion.

Heh. Well, I think we won't know for sure until 3.0 is live. (insert nervous laugh here)

But.... as it stands right now if we are talking about dps between the Mara and the Assassin, in my experience the Mara wins that battle hands down. Mara's are dps machines. Assassins have more utility with stealth and more abilities to break casts. But... their dps is lower relatively speaking. I have played both and respeced my Assassin to a tank because I felt I was more useful as a tank given the large dps outputs by Maras and Snipers.

Check out Dulfy. net. Great class guides there that will give great detail and break things down for you.

... the highest DPS ceiling at endgame...

That is an ever changing target. Games get balanced and re-balanced. New gear changes things. New specs, though they'll be less imaginative with 3.0, change things. New bosses with new tactics change things.

From what I've seen in this game, if you're playing a DD class, and you're playing it as well as it can be played, and as well as it can be geared, you're probably within less than 1% of the next guy playing and geared just as well as you are playing that other DD class. And if you're not, you can count on changes coming very soon to make it so.

The DD classes have distinctly different flavors. Ranged or melee. Lightsaber or gun. Different effects. Different styles of rotations. To some degree, different looks though that's merged somewhat due to CM armors.

In the end, I think players might have more fun with the game if instead of trying to get 5 DPS more than the other guy strictly on class build, they instead selected the class whose style and rotation they find fun and interesting.

Here is my subjective answer to your subjective question: marauder 'feels' more like what the class is meant to be.

It feels like a physically strong class. Especially carnage. As you ... massacare ... your opponent, it feels like you are hitting for a truck load of damage. So, in my opinion, the class devs scored on that one.

On the other hand, my assassin always feels off. For what I thought was supposed to be a stealth, stab in the back, kill and be done class (like perhaps the rogue in WoW) ... the assassin just isn't there. At least with deception (up to 6-9 months ago when I shelved her DPS spec). I always felt like I was chasing a proc instead of murderizing my enemy.

I think deception would have been a better 'bleed' spec than the burst mechanics it uses. But that's just me. And madness is too 'sorceror-y' in my opinion for an 'assassin.'

But, in the end, play the one you find more fun. Its your time you are spending, not ours. So make it count!

I'd choose whichever you think you'd have fun playing. ;)

Pretty much this!

I think most players perform better with a class that suits their play style, so it is not necessary relevant what class has higher DPS in theory when one cannot pull it off because the own play style is not fitting the class one has chosen.
