venomlash
Many races are lore-locked. The Sith Warrior, IIRC, can by default only be a Human, Cyborg, Sith Pureblood, Zabrak, or Rattataki. The other races have to be unlocked. How do you unlock them? Well, if you level a toon to 50, that toon's race becomes unlocked for your entire legacy (all your toons on that server), and any new toons you create can use that race regardless of class restrictions. A few exceptions apply, since all classes can be Humans or Zabraks. Leveling a Human to 50 gives all your characters a Presence boost, and leveling a Zabrak to 50 unlocks Imperial Zabrak appearances for Republic classes and Republic Zabrak appearances for Imperial classes. Additionally, the Cathar is exclusive to the Cartel Market and must be unlocked through your legacy; no class can be a Cathar by default. If you were around at launch and bought the collector's edition, you should know this.
Khantalas
Almost correct, except for the Rattataki part.

Also, instead of leveling them to 50, you can also buy an unlock for that species off the Cartel Market for Cartel Coins or off the GTN (if anyone is selling it). Adric_the_Red
Almost correct, except for the Rattataki part. And the Cathar part. Cathar species can only be unlocked with item from the Cartel Market, you don't get it "through your legacy". And it's an account unlock. Buy it from the CM (or GTN) and use it, and it will be abvailable on every server, even ones where you don't have a legacy (or even characters) yet. On your XP bar it should have a little indicator on the right hand side. There's a gold border around the entire xp bar, along with the little 'tag" at the end of it, just like during double XP weekends. Also, if you look at your class mission rewards in your mission log, and compare them with other, similar level missions, the difference should be obvious.
