Adaptive Armor

To expand on what the above posters have said, adaptive armoring is almost entirely cosmetic out of the box. You will notice that the tooltip has three or four lines in white -- "Armoring: Open, Mod: Open, Enhancement: Open. Dye: Open". With the exception of the dye, the piece derives its stats from the armoring / mod / enhancement you put in it. Armorings have your mainstat, endurance, and determine the piece's armour rating (i.e. your damage reduction from armour). Mods have your mainstat, endurance, and at higher levels one of power, critical, defense or absorb. Enhancements have endurance and a combination of one or two of power, critical, surge, accuracy, defense, absorb, alacrity, and shield.

To expand what the above poster said - there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

The armors, mods, and enhancements have a level (and a rating). You'll want to put items that are as close as possible to your character's level and upgrade them to higher levels as necessary. You can't use items that are higher level than you are - that is, if, for example, your character is level 35, you can only use addons that are level 35 or below*.

You can upgrade the addons by simply writing over them with newer units.

Make sure the main stat on the armorings and mods matches your characters main stat - strength, cunning, willpower, aim.

In the early stages, the secondary stat on the mods and enhancements is not that important but as you get up to level 55 and/or you decide on a particular "build", the secondary stats should be chosen to aid that build.

*note - the addons also have their own rating and a "blue" or "pink" lower level part may have a higher rating than a "green" proper level part.

As the first two answers were useless and the last two comprehensive, to add to them....

You GET these modifications, called "mods" for short, from planetary modification vendors or from the GTN. The vendors take "planetary commendations" as payment (at least for another week), which you earn by completing quests and choosing these as your reward rather tan (usually) a piece of green armor more or less at your level. (Note: The short hand "mod" is not to be confused with A Mod, which is one of the types of modifications, i.e.: A "mod" is an armoring, an enhancement, a Mod, a Barrel (for a firearm), or a hilt (for a lightsaber.))

Mods and enhancements cost 2 commendations each, An "armoring" costs 7 commendations, until you get to level 50 where the cost goes up. All the vendors are on fleet and capital planets. You can usually find a vendor on each planet selling mods for that planet's level. Note that all mods are not available for all levels. Most are only for odd-numbered levels, though there are exceptions. There's more. It's a complicated business, but this is enough to get you started.

So far I haven't used any of the adaptive armor, it seemed so complicated when I saw the need to find a slot kit plus I'm leveling quite fast. Now that it's being chatted about here, I get how it can work if I decide I want my character to stay with a set appearance. I'd forgotten so much of these game mechanics. I've checking around a bit - So apparently the better the quality of the armor slot kits, the better the level of updates that can be inserted into the armor. I've already been stockpiling some pretty orange adaptive armor styles from the auction house by looking at them with CTRL-left click, so maybe soon I'll see about getting her a specific adaptive armor setup.

I'm not quite sure what you mean -- the only thing that needs slot kits are augments, which add an extra boost to your stats, and which are very much not worth it before level 55 (or 60 next week).

Actually the first answer was very useful and answered the question perfectly and correctly and completely.

Everything after that was pretty useless.

You can't be serious. It's like responding to a question, "How do I drive a car?" by saying, "Get in the car and drive." "Put in armoring." is not an answer that is useful to anyone who has no idea what it is in the first place, which appears to be the case here. What is "armoring"? Where do you get it? How do you pay for it? It's not a single thing to do answered with a generality; it's a system that needs explaining to someone who is new to it.

"New Player Help" is for new players trying to figure out how to play the game. A lame answer such this doe NOT answer the question correctly by omitting details and certainly did not answer the question "completely." The answer is sarcastic at best and completely useless in the information it offers. If you can;t do any better than that don't bother answering questions in this section. You are embarrassing yourself.

Yeah if you are getting through with green / blue armor in your leveling ( including any flashpoints you run ) then keep at it. Otherwise you can use the green/blue ... slot pieces ( for lack of a better word, modifications confuse people since there is a piece called a modification heh ) that you can buy from GTN or with planetary coms to upgrade your gear.

Generally it is to do as you are doing and save up adaptive armour you like. Thus when you reach level 50 you can start putting in some pieces in the slots on the armour so you can run some end game content.

If money isn't an issue then do what I always do and pick a nice look you want and put in blue slot pieces each 4-8 levels ( you really don't need to do it every 4 level but you can if you like, I say 4 levels because this is the range on each slot piece ). No real point in worrying about augment slots and augments themselves until level 50 either.

It can be confusing and is quite tricky to explain in a text form but once you get the hang of it it's really quite easy.

If that's not confusing then wait until you get into end game gear and you start ending up with 2 ( or is it 3? ) different ways to talk of the same item ( e.g. are they 28's or 156's ... ), that one took me sometime to get sorted when learning of each tier of gear I wanted to ensure I was getting the best I could get.

Yup it was the augment slots that needed to be prepped, that was what I thought was too fussy. But it's not too bad, like you say, once the adaptive armour is explained. I'm getting though quests fine with the gear I find, so I'll save the fun of getting my cosmetic appearance with the adaptive armor for a bit later as you suggest, just hoarding some pretty things in the mean time. Actually, I haven't done any group missions yet, mostly the team thing has me a bit nervous. I'm being self-sufficient. Group experiences might be a mixed bag. I'd feel more comfortable grouping if there was built in voicechat, but without it, getting quick and efficient communication on tactics might be a bit risky.

I've just got a warning on my character that I'm near the commendation limit of 100. I suppose I'll have to spend some. I was hoping to save as many as possible for when the game moves into the new format and the commendations convert to Basic.

I appreciate all the input and tips on this forum, it's given me a much sharper handle on things that were fuzzy.

Besides "mods" you can also get pieces of mod-able gear from the vendors. It's a great way to get mod-able offhands like focuses, vibroknves, etc, which you can also save for later. (I think level 22 is the lowest level for the offhands)

Indeed -- the Nar Shaddaa equipment commendations vendor is great for Republic characters whose only way to get a moddable offhand before then is by getting lucky FP drops.

:) Thanks, good info. I'll look for a suitable modable generator, a practice run for when I start wearing adaptive armors. I'm finding that generators rarely drop. I just hit level 30, and the generator my Pyrotech has now is quite under-level.

Generally for story based content you won't need voice chat.

If running the group content just mention you are new and not entirely certain of mechanics and most groups are accomodating and will explain, especially if you are geared. Fp mechanics are basic also so take little time to explain, ops a bit more tough but with bolster you can wing it pretty easily.

Have a read of dulfy.net for any explanations of how to do fights before queuing also, makes life easier for all.
