General concensus for need/greed/pass

1. what should I do with crafting materials, schematics, gifts when I can use them/when I can't use them?

People in your group don't know what crew skills you have; so I assume greed is what I should do here regardless whether or not I could use it, right?

2. Whatabout item box/case? Can I 'need' it?

3. Is it ok if I greed everything?

High level crafting materials dropped in level 50 and above flashpoints, you can generally "need" those without anyone throwing a fit, but only use "need" if you actually plan to use them for crafting, if you can't use them in any way go with "greed". For schematics and such, you can ask your group if needing them is OK.

2. Whatabout item box/case? Can I 'need' it?

Not sure what you mean. I don't think item boxes drop in the open world (if they do, I've never seen it), and when you open them the item is yours automatically, so please elaborate on this.

3. Is it ok if I greed everything?

Nobody will mind. What will get people angry is "needing" everything. Need has higher priority than greed, meaning if everyone else uses greed and you use need you always win. That's especially aggrevating if you need on a piece of equipment not meant for your class. People might, by the way, also object to you using "greed" if they know the piece of equipment would objectively improve upon the stuff you currently have (although this is a rarity), in which case you should have needed.

EDIT:

If you're generally unsure, for example with reputation items or such, see what the other members of your group do before deciding need?-greed?-pass?.

1. I think you can need on schematic if you can use it on the toon you are on. Crafting materials is a bit different thing, usually the polite thing is to greed but I always wait until others have rolled to see if someone rolled need (and in pugs someone always does).

2. Greed on those IMO, although I am not 100% sure what you mean with this. Do you mean items that come from boxes in the world? Usually greed on those items unless it's a clear upgrade for your current character (for companions = greed).

3. Sure you can greed everything, it gives everyone a fair chance to win. Pass is only if you really don't want something, even for selling.

I like this approach, most of the time I'll use the third option.

In my experience what has developed over time is:

Needing on:

  • stronghold decorations
  • "exotic" materials (e.g. Exotic Element Equalizers, Biometric Crystal Alloy, etc)
  • "tokens" to purchase items from vendors (Manaan Research, KDY Construction kits, etc)
  • and on gear that is an upgrade for the character you are currently playing in the role that character is filling (i.e. a JK Guardian tank spec needing on what is clearly DPS gear is frowned upon).

All other scenarios are greed or pass depending on individual player preference, i.e. I greed on everything other than the above because if no one in the group needs it I want the credits. OTOH, some players pass on anything they do not need because they do not care about the credits.

That being said, IMO communication is key. If you have any doubts about clicking need for something...ASK THE GROUP!!! When everyone else has clicked greed, 99 times out of a hundred if you ask the question: "May I need for...

...offspec?"

...a companion?"

...an alt?"

some in the group will say "go for it."

But notice the underlined above. If someone else has clicked need on a piece of gear you want for offspec, companion, or alt, chances are they need it for the character they are playing and the role they are filling. You can still ask the question but be aware you might get some pushback.

Story about this: back in my WoW days, I as running some random dungeon and an item dropped that I could use for offspec. I missed that someone had clicked need, so I asked the question,"may I need for offspec?" I waited a little while and asked again. I waited until the last possible moment and got no response, so I clicked need and won. Only then did the player who clicked need but that I did not see, rail into me cussing me out etc etc etc (back then there was no trading CD, so the BoP item was mine). I apologized profusely, but my stance was simple: I asked twice and got no response; if the person had responded I would have passed and there would not have been a problem.

The point is that not only is asking the group important, but paying attention to those questions being asked is equally important.

You can ask for the item to be traded to you / you can trade the item to someone else, for 2 hours after rolling, so personally I just ask the group what the rules are, and then if there's something I want but don't know (like mats and stuff), I can always trade or discuss the item at the next break in the fighting. It's not like it's set in stone once you've rolled.

My own general rule is:

If it is for my class and an improvement = need.

If a companion can use it ask first, otherwise greed (I see this a lot when I run troopers through Essles, jedi always hitting need on aim pieces for their comps)

Crafting material I generally pass on, but only because I don't need it right now. If I were aiming to use it I would at least greed if not need.

Anything else I greed unless we have someone in the group hitting need on everything. If someone in the group is needing anything and everything I hit need and pray I get the item just to spite them.

Greed is always polite enough. If you do have that crew skill, by all means choose need if you want the schem. If someone else rolled need, and you find out after the FP, group or whatnot, you already have it in your ("%¤#%#&%¤!"#¤") long list of schems, you can trade it to that person for 2 hours, as mentioned above. Reputation tokens, and the "boxes" from FPs I "need" only if I really need and want it. If I would get say 2 KDY construction kits, and others rolled need and got nothing, I might pass. Just play fair, towards myself, as well as towards others. It does happen sometimes, that greed gets the item, even though someone else rolled need. If I know that someone needs the rep token, I pass. I also pass, when my notoriously full inventory has like 2 or 3 slots left, and the item is not worth more than what I carry around (and can trash or sell to a rep bot).

There will always be some such, that certainly is true. How many, is a matter of perception. And luck with whom one gets grouped. I dare say, I meet way more fair people, than unfair ones. I find the system works well enough. When it matters more, the group leader can put in loot-master.

The whole "need/greed/pass" concept is complete rubbish.

Why ?= Because there will always be some who want to get an advantage over everyone else by using "need" - and THEN sell the item in the GTN (if it's not bound).

So, we really don't need this anymore, imho.

I disagree. The system works great for the majority of FPs I run. Every now and then someone might "need" everything, but they often get called out by the group and change their behavior. Just because a system doesn't work 100% of the time is no reason to scrap it.

Add "reputation items" (Voss Historical Tablet, KDY Sacking of Coruscant Hologlobe, etc.) to that list. These generally are rewards for various daily/weekly missions, but they sometimes drop as loot. Roll Need on those, unless you've maxed out your rep with that group, in which case, choose Greed or Pass.

No need to search your list.

If you don't already know the schematic, it will be "bright", otherwise, it will be "dark" (same as for other items you can/can't use). Also, if you right click on a schematic you have already learned, you will get a message saying you already know that schematic, and the item will not get used.

That is bugged for me a lot of times, gut feeling about 3-4 out of 10 times. Short version for me is double clicking on the schem.
