Sniper or Operative?

I'm looking to level another alt before the 12x xp runs out. My 2 favorite types of classes are ranged and stealthed dps but I lean more towards ranged. I would probably go sniper without thinking twice but the whole cover system seems annoying to me and I am not sure if I would like it or not.

Anyways, I just want to get some opinions on both and find out a little more about the cover system.

Which should I pick?

Thanks!

You get used to the cover system. At least, I did on my gunslinger. That said, I suggest going Operative. Why? Really, imo (of course), it just fits the Agent storyline better.

Seriously, you don't get the range of what a sniper should get, and a firefight with a sniper rifle? :/ Though, this is only saying go that route if you haven't done an Operative or Scoundrel yet. :)

I started with a gunslinger (its the rep sniper) then I moved in the empire and made an OP, now I also leveled a sniper...but for me personally, I preffer my OP. Since you have 12xp boost, make both and decide :)

Yeah I would love to level both but I won't have time. I still have an assassin, marauder, commando and the agent to level. I know it doesn't take much time but my play time is limited to when my 18 month old daughter goes to bed. :p

Sniper does a lot of damage, but I prefer my Operative over my Sniper. As static as the Sniper can be, the Operative is constantly moving. As you're a PvPer that's much more viable.

ETA: You do get used to the cover part of it all, the game really rewards you for being in cover too. If you want pure DPS the Sniper is the obvious choice (at least in PvE, I don't know how well it stacks up in PvP). I just think the Operative is much more fun to play. Which is entirely subjective.

Both are fun to play. I played a scoundrel for ages until I finally rolled a gunslinger and found out I actually liked it even more than the scoundrel in some cases. If you plan on going dps only, I'd go for a sniper.

The cover system is something you'll get used to but it does make the sniper more stationary than other ranged classes. Kiting won't be nearly as effective, until you get the sniper roll at 51 you'll have to make good use of your roots and knockbacks (well, more than usual). Cover really only becomes a slight annoyance in Marksman spec when you have to re-enter cover to proc your insta-snipe (MM is an awesome spec though, one of my favs). Also don't forget snipers can't be leapt to in cover, have entrench (cc immunity), one of the best knockbacks ingame, 2 knockbacks if you spec into it and also sniper rifles!

Operative and Sniper might have the same base class, but they play so very differently there's almost no connection between them.

Operative fits the Imperial Agent storyline better, the story seems designed around a stealthy, secretive character.

I feel the Sniper has an identity crisis. Sniper is such a misnomer anyway because of the lack of stealth. 'Sniping' at close range and in full view of your opponent just feels wrong. Rifleman would be a better name (Gunslinger fits the Rep version much better).

Personally I prefer Merc or Sorc for ranged dps, the whole cover system for Snipers feels clunky. Yes you get used to it and learn to work around the issues, but the fact stilll remains that it is a clunky design feature they just didn't think through properly.

I get so sick of having to press a key and crouch over & over & over again during boss fights on my Sniper. I wish I could macro or have it automatically crouch when using an ability that requires it. Yes I say crouch because taking cover is going to cause you to roll into another location which could take you out of line of sight or put you into something you don't want to be in.

I've mained Sniper for a long time now and I removed the keybind for roll to cover pretty much when I started. It's a pain and often rolls you the wrong way.

You can set a keybind just to crouch in place 100% of the time. You can then move yourself behind an object and use crouch to gain the cover effect rather than rolling straight there.

The crouch/cover system put me off Sniper for a while, but honestly.. you get completely used to it pretty much right from the get go.

I put crouch, in the uncrouched page of quickbar1, on the same key as series-of-shots on the crouched page. A quick double-tap of that key and I crouch and fire - the crouch doesn't even animate.
