Leveling as a Madness Assassin

Madness is my favourite spec. There , I said it. But in leveling I'm dying before I can do much damage. I use my DoTs and Raze with Deathmarks but I'm so squishy I just die. Any advice on gearing , stats , which companion etc. would be greatly appreciated.

The Madness spec doesn't' mature very quickly. I'd go deception until 45, when you can fill out the whole madness tree. None of the dot specs really work before 45. Takes too long to get to those abilities, leaving you without half of your attacks for 44 levels.

I levelled all the way up with madness, using Khem, then Ashara for a bit, then Talos. Didn't have any issues, really. Is your gear up to level? Also, don't forget you can stealth by most mobs and with 12XP you will still level on pace. Plus, your out of combat mez can control the champs or strongs in a group before you pull.

Not sure. I generally just spend my comms on modding my gear ever two planets

The big difference between Deception and Madness is that you use death field and discharge to attack all mobs at once, this also draws all the agro straight to you instead of your meatshield companion.

There is no real AoE in deception so you just take the agro from the mob you are attacking.

 

You can try to hotkey your companion his mas taunt and activate it when you need it instead of letting the npc decide when to mas taunt.

Or place less dots on different mobs and use crowd control more, perhaps spec into the whirlwind buffs while lvling until you reach lvl 40+

I must admit, I had no problem levelling as Madness whatsoever - I'm not sure what the problem is. My gear ended up a bit behind sometimes thanks to the super fast levelling, but if you stick with Khem I'm not sure how you can go too wrong.

 

How are you opening up in a fight?

agreed, death field is deadly on weak mobs if your gear is up to date..

well a burst tree is better than a "dot" spec..no way about that.

I'll add my results from reading to this as well.

 

I'd had basically the same problem. Got to a place just this week around lvl 30, and was dying much too rapidly w/out really even coming close on boss fights. So i read the advice, did some searches and fixed my issues. Which basically boiled down to

 

1) Too low of gear.

a) resolved by making some upgrades equipment wise-mods-enhancements

2) Went and got my rotations down.

a) At least better then what I was doing. I think this was a much better result then even the gear.

 

I went back to the same boss, and Khem dropped w/about 2 rotations to go on the boss, but w/a medpac I finished the boss w/out too much fuss. It made me scratch my head though because the boss had been such a PitA beforehand. See if thats the problem. Maybe its something as simple as spending 20-30minutes getting gear/rotations down.
