For SWTOR, Vent, Teamspeak, Mumble, other?

Not sure where to post this exactly, and when I did a search for best voice chat option, I got a thread two years dead. And my Inquisitor has my grave digging equipment.

So, thinking of DLing a voice chat program more for QoL, and the ability to be better off than just typing in group chat.

So, for SWTOR, what program do you recommend, and does it require equipment (headset w/speaker, just a speaker, can the crappy laptop mic work, so forth), a subscription?

It's all personal preference.

I have vent, TS, and Mumble.

My personal preference is Mumble.

It's quicker and easier to set up... and the overlay actually works right.

TS is the only working solution IMO. Vent is good but temperamental, and mumble is a total failure.

Well.. that's an interesting, albeit it over dramatic and seemingly caustic and uninformative take on it.

Have you reasons for your passionate opinion regarding each of them?

They all work fine (in)dependent of SWTOR. I have Mumble/TS3 installed on my computer, and those seem to be the most "popular" options. Most guilds have a single program they use, which is the one you should certainly start with. If you're thinking about joining other groups for Ops/PvP, it's good to have all 3 installed so that you can join and chat.

The best equipment answer is headset w/ mic. You'll be able to hear everyone talk with just a speaker, but in order to talk back you need some sort of mic. Normal computer mic does work, but it can be a bit more tricky to integrate (push to talk, mute, etc.). If you're serious about installing a voice program, I wold recommend getting a headset w/ mic. It's just the way TS3/Ventrilo/Mumble were designed to function.

It will not cost you anything to use. Most guilds have a private server that they use host chats. There are also free public rooms. These private servers do cost money, and are paid for in various ways (i.e donations/GM covers/etc) and cost varies on channels/member limits and things like that.

Hope this helps.

Hey OP... just so you know... you don't have to spend a ton on some high end headset (unless of course you want to).

I got a pair of the following (follow link) and they are actually REALLY GOOD QUALITY! I was extremely impressed, expecting them to be less than ideal.

Since we are at it..

I'm using a Bluetooth MDR-10RBT Sony headset.. It works perfectly until I open any voice chat. When i do use Skype, TS3, Mumble, Raidcall it switch to a second mode and I cannot hear anything anymore but the voice chat. So no background music. No game sound. Nothing. Anyone know what this problem is?? And how to fix it?

I'm no expert, but this sounds like the old days of single channel sound cards, where you could only get sound out of one program at a time. Just a guess but maybe your device is only set up to "display" one channel at a time.

Weird.. I can display, youtube, windows media player and a few other program together.. It only happens when I'm using something that could need my micro.

TS3. Tried Vent and didn't care for it. Though as has been said if you want to talk it depends on who and what they use. Your kind of stuck in that respect. Though I tend to hate in game chat.

As for headset I'm still using these: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-HS800-Fatal1ty-Gaming-Headset/dp/B002DS4HTM. I've had them for almost 3 years now and they still work really well. Sound is good and I've never had a problem with people hearing me. The mic has a good directional pick up and noise cancel so not a lot of excess noise which is good for me as I keep the TV on while I play. Great thing is they are usually marked about $25 which isn't bad considering how well they work.

It's possible that your software has enabled a feature that mutes other softwares.

It's just a wild guess, but I know for sure that some of them have by default the ability to lower the sound coming from other softwares when one's speaking. If it's set to completely mute other sounds, and someone has a continuous input (can be oneself), it may lead into your situation.

It may be good for you to check if you happen to be in this quite particular case.

My headset seems to have two mode depending of its the input could ever use the micro or not. And I can't have both input at the same time..

First off, are you in a guild? If yes what does your guild use? Get that. Most guilds that have webpages use a comm program that the webpage may give for free or at a discounted rate. As a client you should have to pay nothing for mumble, vent, ts etc...The owner of the service will be the one paying.

My guild uses mumble. 1. 10 slots came with our webpage and I paid to expand the rest and since we have a web subscription we get expanded slots at a price that mumble.com can not compete with. 2. Its easy to use and set up.

I have vent and TS installed also for any occasions that I might pug an op and the group I am running with is using something other than mumble. In general whoever is the ops leader that was doing is the one that determines the voice program.

I used a cheap 20 dollar headset and mic combo I bought at best buy for years before recently upgrading to a 100 dollar set up. Either way you go as long as you can hear commands you will be fine. If you can chat back it will only increase your fun.
