When to use Recklessness as a Sorc?

I've always struggled with a clear answer to this as I've perceived inconsistent results. From what' i've noticed it seems that if you apply recklessness before an aoe attack, such as death field or chain lighting, the autocrit effect applies only to one enemy, or in the case of chain lighting to the main target.

 

For my opener (as a madness sorc), I try to use it after I've built 3 stacks and am about to apply my dots /use shock, but I often spazmatically apply it before force lightning and it just sort of pitters out. After that I'll save it for some big self-heals if needed. If anyone has any insight or if there is some accepted standard I'm not aware of I would appreciate your input.

Use the last charge for death Field. It will crit on multiple people and you only need the one charge.
