FarkleSparkle
So, this is going to be based purely on opinion. I want to play as many classes and roles as I can and have them different. So, I'm not going to play any mirror classes. (ie. Commando and mercenary). So far I have a commando and a jugernaut, and I really want a scoundrel scrapper because of the final ability, sorry I dont know the name. They also look really cool from what I've seen. Yet I am questioning having two republic blaster healing classes. These are the eight classes I THINK im going to start with- Commando (First character), shadow(opposite of commando)Juggernaut(tank) sniper(for the dps). I also want a scoundrel in there somewhere too. Any thoughts on what I should do? Sorry this is my first post in a while and I'm semi-new. Thanks! Fidelicatessen
Play mirror classes, but play the other Advanced Class when you do that. There are eight (8!) different class stories in this game and you are locking yourself out of half of them if you play it the way you described. Some of the stories are debatably skippable (e.g. Consular, Bounty Hunter) but then you have Sith Warrior/Jedi Knight which are both AWESOME stories that wind up telling both sides of a common story. If you actually pay attention to storyline Consular/Inquisitor story is linked with planetary storylines. Because you already have Jugg and Commando I would go with these: JK: Sentinel (mirror: Marauder) JC: Shadow (mirror: Assassin) Smuggler: Scoundrel (go with Scrapper because it's awesome if you don't want second healer) (mirror: Operative) SI: Sorcerer (Lightning FTW!) (mirror: Sage) BH: Powertech (mirror: Vanguard) Agent: Sniper (mirror: Gunslinger)

However, "scrapper" scoundrel is a dps tree. You'll get offheals, but unless you are going up the sawbones tree you are not a healer. If you do flashpoints you should not queue as a healer (earlier levels, it's more flexible). Similarly, if your commando is going in a different tree other than combat medic, you are not actually playing a healer, you are playing a dps. If you want to play a healer role or a tank role on any character, you need to pursue the specific tree that is dedicated to that role. Otherwise, you're dps. Basically, play what seems appealing. Don't worry about having "two republic blaster healing classes"

Sorry, this is something I've always wondered about. Let's compare a dps mercenary and a sniper. Would the sniper have better dps just because it is purely dps and marc can heal, or would they be equal dps-wise? This is in general, not just between these two. septembersphinx
Sorry, this is something I've always wondered about. Let's compare a dps mercenary and a sniper. Would the sniper have better dps just because it is purely dps and marc can heal, or would they be equal dps-wise? This is in general, not just between these two. In general, any two dps trees should ultimately pull down similar dps numbers, even if one is part of an advanced class that also has a healing tree, and the other one is part of an advanced class that does not. If a sniper is significantly outperforming a merc dps, it's more due to the player behind the sniper being particularly good, or having better gear. Perfect balance is, of course, impossible to achieve and things are constantly getting tweaked. While a merc dps has some healing abilities, a sniper dps has quite a variety of pushbacks, stuns, and defensive abilities depending on which tree they've specced. A merc dps, in a group situation with a dedicated healer, will almost never be in a situation where it is better for him to selfheal instead of laying down damage. Who has "better" dps is very situational. Some trees have better burst damage, some lay down better aoe, some are better against single targets. Some are a lot more mobile, while others have lots of channeling. Over all, tactical flashpoints notwithstanding, swtor is pretty trinity based, with not a lot of viability in hybridization. If you're a dps, you should be dpsing, if a healer, healing.

Some are a lot more mobile, while others have lots of channeling. I think this is the point that should be hammered in to most people who want to know who does better damage. Overall numbers are similar, but each class (and many specs) handle differently. A marksman sniper for example is very good single target sustained and can easily target switch without much loss. Some marauder/sent specs are horrible at target switching because of their ramp up time but do great sustained damage - and some have very impressive aoe.
