So...Mercenary...fun to play?

So I was kinda excited to take a mercenary for a spin (dual pistols, ranged attack, and I don't mind the bounty hunter story since I went a little further into it with my powertech), I had armor, a name (who wouldn't love a mercenary named Mercedez?), pistols, and even blue armor/mods made from cybertech.

I know bounty hunters/troopers have an absurdly easy levelling experience due to early healing companions + decent dps + armor; however, the more I read about how mercenaries fare in warzones, the less excited I became about them (i am an exclusive pvp player, I have only ever done one flashpoint ever--one run of black talon), to the point I might not even bother playing one...

So my questions are: are mercenaries fun to play at all for a pvp player? and are they fun to level up at all?

I know the BH story and even though I'm by no means advanced in the game I consider myself to better than a novice.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

Ughh... Well let me put it this way. Do not let the vitriol and hyperbole of the forums sway your desire to play a class. Mercenaries are very fun and satisfying to play. In both dps and heals they play wonderfully and overall, again, very fun to play. According to the forums every single class excluding Sentinels/Marauders(a few others I'm sure) fail at PvP yet so many players find their way on the top of leaderboards consecutively in warzone after warzone even though they are playing 'fail classes'.

Mercenaries can be pretty stationary at times, but as you improve and adjust you'll find yourself being very mobile. Their rotations are easier than most and IMO the impact and sound of their abilities just has that oh so satisfying feel.

Level 34 pyro and having a blast. Bodyguard can be difficult until you get heat reduction talent to rapid scan. Over all it is a lot more interactive and fun compared to my sage and scoundrel. Overall if you stop having fun then it might not be for you.

I absolutely loved leveling my Merc. I absolutely loved gearing my Merc. I absolutely love raiding on my Merc. He is a blast. He is also my last-in-line alt, so he has the worst gear but he is still an absolute blast.

leveling is AoEmazing

in pvp, they've gotten a lot of improvements over last year, so it's hard for me to say with conviction that it's really awesome or if i'm just looking through the lens of 'it was so horrible for so long'

but it's still pretty fun

For me the merc was a little boring (playing arsenal at lvl 47), due to immobility and very few single target skills that you use in your rotation when leveling. Sage/sorc is a lot more fun for me. But I think this is a perfect example that different people prefer different things. :) So, as stated above, try it and if you're not having fun with the merc, than the class is not for you :)

Btw. can anyone suggest a thread with pyro or hybrid merc builds? Like I said, full arsenal was not for me, but I kinda feel bad about giving up on my character, seems how he's a bit high lvl .

I've leveled a commando and had fun doing that. When it was time for BH I decided to go PT instead of Merc, a few levels in and I could already tell that it was not for me (I've never felt that way about an AC before). So now it's back to rolling a new BH and going merc. Not sure why I picked PT in the first place because I've always prefered ranged classes. Edited by MidichIorian

I've been here since beta. First toon was a Mercenary. We've been through tough times and good times. I LOVED my storyline. Most fun i've EVER had leveling a class for ANY game. That said, PvP is a weird creature.

When u hit 36 leveling, its immensely fun for pvp from there on. Loved it. Awesome for PvE and raiding too. Once you hit 55, you hit a wall though....

Your a merc. Which means you have no good emergency "Oh snap" button so people will focus you first. Your also a stationary target (if Arsenal or Bodyguard) so melee has a fieldday with you 90% of the time. To be a good Merc PvPer will take a lot of determination and a high learning curve. Knowing what stats to look for in gear for optimum damage or healing, knowing when to run, positioning, and kiting is a major part of your survival. You can't go invis, AoE stun/mez, put up an invincible bubble or leap away. You must kill or be killed.

It will be difficult. BUT, if you manage to make it, you will be freakin AWESOME. I am a pyro merc, and no class can beat me 1v1 unless i am heavily outgeared and that doesn't happen often. I burn down droves of enemy players while i run and laugh at them trying to catch me. Took a long damn time.

If u want a class that takes a lot of patience and skill to be good at but is worth it, roll your merc. You wanna just roll a easier FOTM class, go ahead. When your class gets nerfed, expect to get focused tho.

Merc is so much fun to play. Don't do pyro. You're just gimping your kill power. You'll get numbers, but you lack the serious single target burst arsenal has. You're pretty much choosing to be less effective for your team. Also, your tracer helps your team's overall dps but reducing armor.

Heals is not for the faint of heart. Its tons of fun but requires much more work than the other two healing classes. Overall, mercenary has become my favorite class.

Edit: Again, don't do pyro. Any equally skilled arsenal merc will wipe the floor with you. Especially because the dot from Combustible Gas and Thermal Det can be cleansed very easily. Learn arsenal. Learn the ins and outs and all the ways to up your survivability because like i said an equally skilled arsenal merc means far more to a team than one running pyro. I've seen some great pyro mercs, but they just aren't as effective. Its like an MM sniper and lethality. Lethality will have higher numbers due to dots, but less effective killing power. DoTs are so easily cleansed by the 1-3 op healers you will see per match as well as any merc worth his/her salt.
