So we all know that there are various forms of these in the game as companions. My suggestion is why not allow players to have the option as well to play a melee version of this. All you would have to do would be enable the players the ability to use melee weapons (staffs, vibroswords too please) in our passive abilities. The animations are already there on the following companions:

 

Qyzen, Akavvi, Torian, Tano, Yuun, Scorpio--They all play melee versions of these classes. Please allow us the player to as well.

While an interesting idea, this kind of takes away from what makes the Knight and Warrior special; they are the melee class. On top of that, it takes away from the BH and Trooper; they are the heavily armored ranged powerhouse. To mix and match takes away what makes those two sets of classes special.

I get what you are saying, but don't necessarily agree. Guardians, Juggs, PT, and Vanguards all use heavy armor. Sure PT and Vanguards have a couple of ranged attacks, but for the most part they too have to be in the up close 4-5 meter range to do majority of their attacks, especially in the tanking roles. Again though the idea of PT/Vanguard going melee could simply be an option that players could choose to use or not, just make it so that the attacks work with both a gun or melee weapon equipped.

What will this provide better than a knight/shadow?

VG have some key ranged abilities/openers - SG,HIB & MV for example.

Some more are 10 meters, not 4... will look odd with melee.
