joshohelp Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I've been thinking. Bioware always used to boast about the heroic combat in SWTOR and while I feel a bit heroic about killing 4-6 mobs with my blaster as a trooper because it's nothing but mashing buttons it doesn't giveme the same kind of feel. What I'm suggesting is a sort of complete revamp of the combat system. It would be a twitch based (shooter mode) sort of thing kind of like how Star Trek Online changed their ground combat but, it would be more refined and more "star wars esque" For instance you'd have an ability wheel or list that you could quickly cycle through to which to an ability or you put abilities down an a hotbar to switch to them. and you'd aim with the mouse and use the ability with the left mouse button. The right mouse button would be used for sniper scopes, blaster scopes or a more zoomed in thing for extra accuracy or whatever. For Jedi/ Sith characters it would be the same thing but, the right mouse button would be used to block attacks/ parry, deflecting blaster bolts also the spacebar would still be used for jumping when in the "out of combat" mode but while in combat the space bar would be used for dodging. It could also be used for jedi to do flips and acrobatic stuff like in the movies. This is just an idea I came up with, obviously it would take a while to code it into the game and maybe some extra overs/ weekend work but in the long run I think it would be worth it. To set SWTOR apart from most MMOs.
theUndead Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Not going to happen. Completely overhauling combat at this juncture is a waiste of time and resources. The devs will not change what already is established because it will take huge amounts of time and will take away valuable time from content creation and bug fixing as well as the re doing of classess and animations. Simply too much work.

Simply too much work. Yes I acknowledged this fact in the last sentence. But, there is always a POSSIBILITY for revamps in MMOs depending on what the developers want to do. I mean they may be revamping space missions as as SSXW they said something "Big" is coming for space combat. But, I can say that my suggestion was a bit long winded but. You never know. Also why would they need to redo classes? I think they're pretty balanced just needs a bit more balancing tweaks, I suppose. But thanks for your feedback.

This is a misconception the classes are not all balanced and I say the classes would need to be reworked because any new combat changes would mean new animations would need to be designed as well as new stat numbers. In other words a whole lot of balancing which as I said takes quite a bit of time and this juncture I do not think its feasible.
Chicktopus Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 You have a point. The combat system is pretty bland and uninspiring. It was something I was extremely disappointed in after hearing all the hype and coming in to the beta. Outside of intricate boss fights it's tedious to fight anything at all. As has been already pointed out it's a lot of work to do, considering balance as well as existing content but it is doable. I think the big question here is "In what way would the combat system be redesigned?" I've seen friends playing Vindictus before and I find the system used there amiable. I can see how a version of that could be adopted to fit with existing content by squashing down some class abilities. It would be nice to do a powerful sweep to knock down opponents with my saber using directions and mouse clicks rather than yet another little icon that does it all for you while you stand absent-mindedly in front of your opponent, waiting for one of you to fall over.

Basically this, I want a more responsive combat system. Also with the animations the enemies and your character should react to most attacks and getting hit otherwise it looks like two people shooting at each other. or two people standing still wacking swords at each other.. not very appealing from a heroic/ cinematic standpoint
