When are we going to get a MAIL SYSTEM worth the name?

Here we are, 20 months after launch, and we still do not have a mail system that allows for multiple recipients. That allows for guild mail. That includes some sort of archiving. Star Wars Galaxies had all this at launch about 10 years ago. Never mind that -- when I had a Bitnet mail account through my university back in 1987, Pine gave us tons more functionality than SWTOR's mail system does.

Even considering the bandwith issues of using 9600 baud modems, we still had no real limit to the number of characters we could include in our messages. Why can't you, BioWare, figure out how to allow us more than what? is it 64? 100 maybe? I have no idea, because when I run up against it I certainly do not have the patience to count it out.

In game right now, we have a mail system that could not hold it's weight against systems using 300 baud acoustic modems and teletypes as your "terminal" back in the late 1970's. If there was a reality show on MMOs. BioWare would probably get sent home during episode 1 for failing so miserably in this.

Let's not make it easy on the spammers shall we?? There is nothing wrong with the mail system.. That is why guilds have websites and chat systems like Ventrilo..

If a guild really needs to send people a message.. Try the message of the day.. It works too..

Email is fine.. ;)

It is worth the name. I write a letter. I put it in a mailbox. It gets sent to the person I wrote to.

That's it.

Besides, no one wants to receive guild newsletters. Like take out menus and baby shower notices, we just shove that crap in a drawer and pretend that your stuff got lost in the mail.

Not general Group Mail it would just be spam central then. I do think however, that Guild leaders and their deputies within the context of the guild should be able to group mail all their guild members or select a set number of guild members to e-mail. Some sort of mechanic in the guild window that allows guild leaders this function, like the message of the day sort of thing but allowing you send items on mass. ;)

I'd suggest you don't allow spammers and credit sellers into your guild. Not everyone has a guild website either -- why start a website to send mail to guildies when MUDs 25 years ago had that sort of functionality IN GAME? As for voice chat ... am I supposed to stay online until all of our 35 or so active members get into voice chat so I can give a 3 sentence message to them?

MOTD? 128 character limit. Even the smallest sized string data types in most database languages are twice as big.

Maybe you're relatively new to MMOs, if your expectations of what we should be able to do IN GAME to communicate with friends and guild mates are that BioWare can ignore it and people should just alt-tab out of game, launch another program or two, and see if anyone else IN GAME is trying to send a relatively simple message to you OUT OF GAME.

This is not rocket science.

Yes, there should be some way to contact a larger group of guild members in the game. There are always guild members who either don't want to join a website or, once they joined, don't check it regularly. We also had people who had trouble receiving mail or logging in.

Then there are also important information and announcements that concern all guild members and need to go out within a certain time frame.

Performance affected by the data associated with and carried around by each character has been cited as reason why we don't have a more complex mail system (a sent mail log would be nice as well). But a forced expiration date / limited retention time for guild mail could help prevent the accumulation of such mail in the mailboxes.

There could be further limitations on volume/frequency like 5 round mails per month or 1 per week or even "postage" fees. Just an option to mail 80+ members the same information within a reasonable time frame would be nice.

1.) Guild mail is for guilds. If your GM or LTs are spammers, your problem is not guild mail.

2.) Message of the day is too short and overwritten by the next message before some people had the chance to read it.

We have a website and voice chat and sometimes we cannot reach all we need to reach in time. Not everyone is in voice chat, not everyone is in voice chat all the time, not everyone is registered to the website, not everyone checks the website every day *just in case there might be a message*. But every active player logs in to the game and checks their mail box.

We also have groups that are online at different times and an option to send out messages through a guild mail system in-game would help getting information out to more than just the ops teams that are online at prime time.

It would make the life of guild leaders a little bit easier and we could get a few things done better and faster simply because it doesn't take 3 days to get everyone up to speed about plans and changes.

Incredible that this still isn't done.

I mean, it shouldn't be wide open as in "mass mail everybody" but a guild mail function seems like a no-brainer, with only officers allowed to mail the entire guild. And the ability to mass mail a few people, say a group of friends, I'd settle for 6 people or something wouldn't really break anything.

I was trying to set up a nice price-fixing oligopoly today and needed to contact three other people so we could agree to stop competing and really stick it to the consumers like every other company in the world ;) but now I have to contact them and set up a business meeting. Doesn't Bioware realize we're busy people?

Sorry, but I tuned out when I saw the magic words: SWG.

Has a similar effect on me when people start their complaint threads with "I'm a Founder..."

some times when i try to send a mail to an alt i get a message of type "the recieve has no room for more mail'' or something like that WTH?

I am a guild leader, and for years, i have been arguing for Guildmail ability by GM, and any rank designated to send out guild email.

WHY? you ask.

MOTD doesn't have enough characters to send out a coherent in depth message, and very few people use out of game information sources.

Guild events, and rules, would be so much easier, if we could send a GUILD wide message, once in a while.

What I wouldn't give for cross server mail so I could send items to My char on other servers. I know it will NEVER happen but one can dream.
