Rousso Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) I've decided it's time for an upgrade, although SWTOR was "playable" on my old rig it was pretty annoying having the FPS lag and noticeable (although slight) ability delay. Here's what I've gone from: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR 4GB DDR2 (800Mhz) NVIDIA 560ti And here's what I've gone to: Intel i5 4670K Haswell Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H 8GB DDR3 (1600 Mhz) NVIDIA 560ti (still the same GPU for now) And the performance improvement is... barely noticeable. Here are actual honest FPS ratings before and after. PvE - before (30 - 50 FPS) and after (50 - 70 FPS) PvP - before (12 - 28 FPS) and after (32 - 48 FPS) These are all stock speeds, without SWTOR unleashed and any other tweaks (well, apart from the Win XP SP3 compat setting) and I'm not very impressed. Every other game I've got has massively improved, the secret world was terrible before and is now fluid at max settings. Also, the ability delay seems slightly worse... although I need to play more to really work that out. It's a lot better than it was sure, but the whole single-threaded(ness) and terrible optimisation and the dropping to ~3 FPS when spamming crew skills etc while moving around is exactly as it was. Well, at least I've proven to myself finally that this is a terrible, terrible engine. Please improve this, I get how hard it is - but I'm pretty sure all the things you guys want to do with this game are a no-go with this technical debt looming over you. MSchuyler Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 You didn't even change the video card, and yet you expect a vast improvement????? So this shows what adding some RAM and swapping the CPU can do for you, but other than that you didn't do much at all. I'm not surprised you didn't get much and no, BW isn't going to change the engine based on what little you did.

I'm not surprised you didn't get much and no, BW isn't going to change the engine based on what little you did. Well... yes. Vastly improving the actual core of my computer, yes... of course I expected a significant improvement. Considering my FPS meter has been CPU bound (and by the way, it's still CPU bound) since day 1. "Adding some RAM and swapping the CPU" is a massive understatement, I've DOUBLED the RAM (and not just doubled it, hugely improved the clock speed). Also, by replacing the motherboard I've gone from SATA II to SATA III so my SATA III capable HDDs are now working at full ability. There's a massive amount of throughput I've improved there, and every other game relishes in it... except this one. Come on... seriously? You're telling me, despite all the other threads on here about terrible performance, that this engine is optimal and doesn't need massive improvements? My thread was just for the curious to see what "swapping out" core components yields. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don't know much about how computers work... in fact, I won't assume - I'll conclude. Thanks for keeping the game as it is with your tolerance. Edit - by the way, what if I swap out my mouse and defragment my keyboard? Edited August 13, 2013 by Rousso

It looks like you received a 20 FPS boost in all situations, which just happens to mean that your PvP minimum frame rate has more than doubled. So what is the problem? The RAM amount upgrade will make zero difference as this game only loads into 1.2-1.4GB, SATA II to SATA III makes near zero difference with this games poorly optimized compression/decompression scheme. Hell an SSD makes things only a little faster. You need to use something like SWTOR Unleashed and load some of the compressed files into RAM. The RAM speed boost and CPU upgrade are the only things that have boosted your game play at this time. Edited August 13, 2013 by TheSkate
Basreia Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Hey! I have the same video card and have settings to where it's smooth as butter AND looks amazing with no problems ever. I sent you a pm with information on how to do it
Hambunctious Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Very well I'll get to it Thanks, I have the same card as well. It just amazes me that there's no difference in fps between the lowest, and the highest settings (40-50 fps). There definitely was at one point. This game ran like a champ in late beta, and they changed something to make it run poorly, and it has never improved.
Darth-Malice Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 So I bit the bullet and decided to reply. Why do you think anyone honestly needs to know this information or would care?
Toweleeeie Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 So I bit the bullet and decided to reply. Why do you think anyone honestly needs to know this information or would care? They compressed all the files. The 1st time I dowoaded the beta it was over 7 or 8 GB. The last round of beta it was only 3 or 4 GB. I'm assuming they did it for poorsies who don't have real Internet. Yeah I know, the last super power problems.
Basreia Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Some people would like to know this information and others care because some of us like helping. I help all I can in pm's if there is a problem and am very technical Some people just have not had proper optimization of their systems from time to time and it is up to us as a community as a whole to help people out so they can enjoy the game to. If you have any questions feel free to pm about your technical problems. I will help all I can
Rousso Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 So I bit the bullet and decided to reply. Why do you think anyone honestly needs to know this information or would care? GENERAL discussion Mr. Misery pants. I'm always curious to see what upgrading yields - I made this thread with the intention of satisfying the curiosity of anyone thinking of upgrading their machine. OK, yes - and also to have a little whinge about the crippling single-threaded engine preventing this game (of which despite my waaaaing I actually really like and hope succeeds) being amazing.
