Yes you can upgrade your companions armor and weapons, you can either buy stuff on the GTN, craft items for them if you have the appropriate crew skill or you can equip them with drops from mobs you kill.

Not sure if you know how to equip them so will tell you in case you don't. If you get a drop that your companion can use, open you character sheet and click on the companion tab at the bottom, if you hover over the item in your bag you can see if it is better than what your comp is wearing, if it is than just click on it to equip it to your comp.

Just make sure you are giving the companion the right stats as in cunning, aim etc. If you look at the gear you companion comes with when you first get them you can see which stat they need.

Hope that helps :)

By default the mouse hover only compares your gear to the item being hovered over, regardless of whether your companion page is open. There is a setting in Preferences but i do not know where it is off the top of my head.

Further, in addition to buying, crafting, and random drops, quest rewards sometimes offer companion upgrades. When this happens, there will be one item for each of your currently available companions (you will not get an option to get a piece of gear for a companion you have not encountered yet).

Yes and its important to keep your companion aswell yourself geared to his/her level especially if your a healer. you don't have to get them moddable gear really but blue/purple gear that is at least close to there current level. Don't forget your companion like yourself has a main stat check the codex if your not sure what the primary is (Aim, Cunning Strength or willpower). Willpower is important for Healing, Strength important for hand to hand weapons, Cunning for tech ability power for agents and smugglers and Aim for troopers and bounty hunters, aim is useful for all ranged weapon chars mind as a secondary. Endurence useful for all as more endurance = more health, most items will have endurance stats increases as a secondary stats.

If your companion is tanking for you ensure you focus on getting him high endurance, good armour pref Heavy and good defence and/or absorption rating stat increases. Remember a tank is there primary to take the heat off you and to take alot of hits and be hard to kill, so defence before attack power.
