Ozdogg Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I'm not demanding a response from the Devs. I'm merely suggesting that its time the Producers made an official statement regarding the acquisition and now sacking of Lucas Arts by Disney and the on going existence of this game. There's some uncertainty in the TOR community (well, at least me) about the future of this game. I've been a subscriber since Early Access in 2011. I'm concerned and I'd like to know if the Mouse is going to shut down The Old Republic.
Alavastre Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 They don't need to. This is a licensed game. Disney wants licensed games.
DarthBama Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 They don't need to. This is a licensed game. Disney wants licensed games. This. SWTOR is the exact model Disney is looking for.

Why is there uncertainty, the only connection between SWTOR and Lucas Arts is that BW have a licence for this game for which they pay a fee and someone who was with Lucas Arts had input on design decisions to keep the game in line with the Star Wars IP. This license model is exactly what Disney have said they want to have in the future.
Ozdogg Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) This. SWTOR is the exact model Disney is looking for. What if Disney wants an MMO based in the New Republic and not the Old. Do you think they'll want competition for that MMO? Edited April 4, 2013 by Ozdogg
RixoFutu Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) Oh, still some of ppl don't understand how this bussiness works. TOR doesn't belong to Disney. They can't shut it down. EA has license for this SW game and that's what Disney wants and will look for even harder next days. So only option to shut down game from Disney is actually take away licence they sold to EA. And that's not gonna happen, never. What if Disney wants an MMO based in the New Republic and not the Old. Do you think they'll want competition for that MMO? And why would they? Their income will be from license selling, not from game itself or it's subscribers so they don't really care about game. They don't want to make these games, only provide licenses for them. If they think they can make more money with something else, they'll do it.
RixoFutu Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Right, because Lucas didn't take the license away from Sony so TOR could be the only Star Wars MMO in town. It is business. If they think they can make more money with something else, they'll do it. Seriously doubt it.

RickShan Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I think the people behind this game, should give a statement commenting the shut down of Lucas Arts and how it will affect SWTOR, at least to calm the fears of people who love this game. I thinking of resubbing and getting some stuff of the cartel shop, but i wonder if it will be worth it... What if Disney pulls the plug on TOR, or takes this game in a direction players won't like...
RixoFutu Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Unless they think this game is damaging the intellectual property they spent billions to own. You really need to learn what lisence is.

RixoFutu Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 or takes this game in a direction players won't like... Jeez, Disney do not own this game, they can't affect it's direction or anything else.
Doctoglethorpe Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 What if Disney wants an MMO based in the New Republic and not the Old. Do you think they'll want competition for that MMO? Do you think that MMO would exist any sooner then say maybe 5 years from now? Part 2: Do you really think SWTOR is still gonna be relevant by then?
Ozdogg Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 You really need to learn what lisence is. Spelling it correctly would be the first step to understanding it. This is a company (Disney) that fired their CEO in order to maintain a partnership with Pixar. Having to spend a few million to cut ties with EA/Bioware is nothing to a company the size of Disney.
RixoFutu Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) Spelling it correctly would be the first step to understanding it. No arguements, huh? Ok. Edited April 4, 2013 by CommunityDroidEN
Ozdogg Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 Do you think that MMO would exist any sooner then say maybe 5 years from now? Part 2: Do you really think SWTOR is still gonna be relevant by then? I have always had hopes for a SWTOR2 with something better than the Hero engine. SWG limped along for over a decade, so yes, I do.
JPryde Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Some people are afraid of everything. LucasArts was out of business for quite some time already, so Disney simply pulled the trigger and closed it. The license for SWTOR is not in the least concerned by that. Disney bought LucasFilm and that included the license... but buying a license does not automatically revoke all contracts. The contract details are between EA and Disney, but I highly doubt, that EA allowed the license on which depends the existance of a 300 million $ project to just be revoked without special reasoning at short notice. Sure, Disney would be able to simply buyout the contract and revoke the license, but why would they ? Licensed games are the thing, Disney is aiming for, they even stated that as fact. SWTOR is such a licensed star wars game and it doesn't cost Disney anything to let it run... while they would have to pay at least 3-digit millions to cancel the license early. Who cares, if the contract runs out after 10 years... Do you guys really think, you will still be playing SWTOR in 9 years ? ... I surely will be playing a different game, if I am still alive. Not cause I do not like SWTOR anymore then, but in the coming decade, new techniques will come and go and games come and go in their wake. Hardly any game survives for that long and to my knowledge none of those that do, is requiring a license of some well known IP.
Ozdogg Posted April 4, 2013 Author Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) No arguements, huh? Ok. Thanks for trying to derail this thread but there is a valid concern that needs to be addressed by the producers of this game. They've been quiet for months since Disney purchased LucasFilm. Now that Disney has taken the provocative move of basically shuttering LucasArts (the division of LucasFilm that EA/Bioware was directly involved with, please check the bottom of this page for their logo) a request for a public statement regarding the going concern of this product isn't out of line. ArenRakescar Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Grand statements about the future of ANY business are pretty worthless in my opinion. Sure, they might mollify the masses and relax their tightened grip on their wallets, but you'll just end up feeling betrayed if they change their minds later. Change is the only constant in the universe. Just play the game and don't sweat the things you have no control over.

I guess I am asking to be mollified but I'd rather not sit in the dark now, while I'm attempting to enjoy the game, than feel betrayed later. I'd prefer a more open discourse on the future of this game.

People would still cry for doom about Disney, even if Bioware would declare otherwise. And you surely are not asking for the details of the contract to be revealed to public, do you ?
kirorx Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Probally will not affect SWTOR for the time being. As someone said before Disney is looking only to charge companies for the IP, not partake in the actual production. Producing a new game would take a long time still, this one was "rushed" from what I understand, but I was hearing about it for a long time before they finally shut the doors on SWG and SWTOR was finally released. Now if someone wants to create a new SW MMO, disney may sell them the IP. After all more money is more money. Even then, disney may renew SWTOR's IP contract and just have 2 MMOs. They make money off the IP not the game anyway. There is no way to know how Disney will handle licensing. Nothing can be announced when there is nothing yet to announce.

I'm not asking for details of the contract. Something in between full disclosure and completely ignoring the topic would be nice though.
