UltimateKrucible Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I've just seen some of the gear available with Makeb and yet again it's got freakin great lumps of metal stuck to the shoulders. Please EA - enough is enough! No-one in the Star Wars universe EVER looked like this! Heck, even knights in full plate armour didn't have shoulder pads like this! They'd look embarrasing on an American Football player! Why don''t your designers get this? The player base have complained over and over again that they want gear that's more fitting for the lore - but over and over again you keep churning out items that appear manage the hat-trick of being ugly, unwieldy and comical at the same time. Take the smuggler - what possible reason would they need a giant hunk of metal on their shoulder for, constantly poking them in the ear while they try to navigate? Why would a Jedi need a pair of metal chevrons on their shoulders? Are shoulders endangered in this universe? Are they some sort of universal weak spot that must be protected at all costs? Why would anyone wear something that meant they had to go through a door sideways? Please stop. Just stop.
Emencie Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 (edited) Shoulder-pads Wait? Not everyone loves the shoulder-pads? Who knew? Edited March 27, 2013 by Emencie
nitratas Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 The designer also seems to have some fetish for weird stuff on the backs of the armor
Alec_Fortescue Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 And hoods. /signed Less massive shoulder pads. Seriously, adjust their size or remove them from the Knight's legacy armor! Why do they look fine on females but males' are huge?!
Joesixxpack Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Agreed on this subject (for about the 100th time). I thought the setting was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, not a freakin' 1980's music video .
oslek Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 The armour available on the CM has no shoulder pads and look very Star Warsy so they know what they're doing. Put out decent armour in game and few would use the CM. Put out butt ugly crap that no one in their right mind would wear and then there's an incentive to spend money on the CM.
AlienEyeTX Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I thought the setting was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, not a freakin' 1980's music video . Well, the 80s were a long time ago and need to stay far far away. Seriously, fashion trends come and go. I'm sure this is true in the Star Wars universe, as well. I really didn't like the original end game armor (some while leveling looked nice), but the armor with Makeb looks pretty good to me. Of course, as has been mentioned, there's good stuff on the CM, so there are options. Between Makeb, Gree, and the CM, I think they've come a long way with the armors. Things will continue to look better. They definitely seem to be listening.
Arlon_Nabarlly Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I don't think they are bad, but they need to have a mix of both options. I think they made a mistake not having shoulders being it's own piece of gear, but it's too late for that now.
zzoorrzz Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Agreed that some pieces look just ridiculous. And there is another problem - big metal boxes on the back of heavy chests - way too frequent.

Put out decent armour in game and few would use the CM. Put out butt ugly crap that no one in their right mind would wear and then there's an incentive to spend money on the CM. Sounds cynical but all evidence supports what you're saying. I loaded up on classic phantom gear and some other simple looking stuff from the GTN. Would be nice not to need to rip mods ($$$) from stock gear but most of it's so damn ugly it's worth it. Why does knight PVP gear look like Spanish Conquistador Meets the Jetsons? Etc. ad nauseum.

Put out decent armour in game and few would use the CM. Put out butt ugly crap that no one in their right mind would wear and then there's an incentive to spend money on the CM. What? The CM is the worst culprit! Look at the Sith sets - most of them would mean that you'd never get more than two Sith in a lift built for 12 people, they are so big. Look at the Conservator's Robe for the Jedi - at last! A plain brown, hood down robe .... WITH METAL SHOULDER PADS! Why? I'm ranting here, I know - but it really has to stop. I hoped that Makeb would finally bring change, but so far it's more of the same.
Illyean Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 everyone but EA/BW get that the armour design has been appalling since launch and only recently has started to change, though not always for the better and nowhere near fast enough. The whole 'look' is completely lost imo, there are some decent levelling looks and there are for sure some sets that are pretty good, but the general look is NOT Star Wars, its just bad. its very obvious they lack the talent to produce the kind of iconic look that everyone wants or even the most basic of options to provide some degree of appearance flexibility. We will never see an appearance tab now (not that we were ever going to) we have the CM. They could add options to hide hands/boots but they cant do that with shoulders or hoods, so I ask WHo thought a game where a hooded robe wearing class are the icon should be deprived of hood up/down? I think a lot of people, myself included, have just gotten used to the fact the look of the gear is bad in a lot of cases and we just put up with it but right now if you posted screenshots of some of the end game gear sets and said what world are these from the answers would range from 'no idea' to 'korean grind mmo' with laughs of 'did you pay for that' included along the way

HOWEVER, You can look at it this way, it was the style then... the game preceded the movies by a few thousand years, and styles change. Remember the 1970's, it was the worst decade ever for style, fat ties, bell bottoms, huge shirt collars.... So, in the era of TOR, this happened to be the time where style was at its worst. Also, those massive shoulder pads are used for "force flying".... i think they are waiting to add this feature. lol. I remember when I got my Jugger to 50 and got that Tionese gear, it made him look like something from a Terminator movie, i quickly removed it.. paid dearly to put all the mods into something nicer though. I bet someone likes the these items, but it is most likely a minority of people. Edited March 27, 2013 by Themanthatisi
Selethar Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 There was a time when the shoulders on plate armor were bulked up and reinforced. Some sets would also have plates that would stick up very high to enclose the head. That gave ways to most of the reinforcement being on one side (offhand) to protect the wearer during jousts. All that being said, I agree 100% with the OP that the armor is silly. I am constantly reminded of Power Ranger villains when I look at a lot of the armor in this game. I currently can't decide which is worse, the helmet that looks like a dead bat was stretched over it or the medic chest piece with the volume controls.

Why do many sports vehicles have Spoilers, even though they dont need them? Because it looks cool I know Shoulderpads dont have any use, but I like them. Makes the char look more heroic. There's a few good pieces, you can get by ..... with orange and adaptive gear its possible to mix and match to ok effect. Just ok, mind. But I'm just so tired of it - and having seen the screenshots for the Makeb pieces I think my patience is close to snapping. Please, designers - go watch the films. Just watch them, ok? Use them as your starting point. And notice the complete lack of shoulder pads before you go further. Edited March 27, 2013 by UltimateKrucible

Jedi used to wear similar, ascetic robes for thousands of years. Same goes for their lightsaber colours. No light side character, save for players, uses red crystals. Huge shoulder pads are not practical and they look comical in some instances. Look at those huge pieces of steel on Guardian's legacy armor. They're just floating in the air and clipping hard into the character during combat. Looks completely unnecessary and stupid, especially since rest of the outfit is just light garments. http://img6.mmo.mmo4arab.com/feature/swtor/120320patch_1_2_armors/patch12_new_armors31.jpg First one on the left. slafko Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 You people are a bunch of ungrateful brats. Instead of whining about every single improvement BW makes to the game for free, you should be happy they're giving you the privilege of playing a game as awesome as this one. Keep it up BW, great work so far! Hope to see more awesome armors in the future.
JPryde Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 (edited) Someone at BW-design got a serious shoulderpad fetish. Please get them some help and remove them from the drawing boards. The Jedi Consular shoulderpads of tionese and above do look like the shoulders did explode for some reason. The Sith shoulderpads however remind me of some transformer, who will lift off at any given moment. When looking at pictures of Smurfcraft, I was always laughing about the ridiculous silly shoulder pads.... and now I play a game, where the designers are doing the same ludicrous design. Well... I only wear orange gear anyway for quite some time. At least that way, I could get one set for each of my chars, with moderate or even no shoulderpads at all. As to the person, who said, that the shoulderpads make their toon more heroic... I got another feeling... to me, such enormous shoulderpads make any char look idiotic. I wish, there were a toggle to just not show the shoulder pad part of an armor at all. Edit: You people are a bunch of ungrateful brats. Some armor sets I do like (particularly the gree stuff), but other armor sets look so silly, that I would not want to be burried in it. Neither of us, who is posting here is playing for free, so the changes made are not exactly for free either. A game which would not evolve, would loose customers very fast. As an SI, my armor (had I kept it ) has probably the biggest, pointiest shoulders in the game. Not very stealthy. Fortunately, it is all getting better. The fashion trends of the galaxy are trending toward a sleeker look. Thank you for listening, Bioware! Edited March 27, 2013 by AlienEyeTX

"Oh, I know my dinner came with a hairball in it, but really I should be grateful that the chef was nice enough to cook me anything. And I know that waiter was super rude to me but really I should thank him for allowing me the privelege to dine in this establishment."
Andryah Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Agreed that some pieces look just ridiculous. And there is another problem - big metal boxes on the back of heavy chests - way too frequent. Agreed. The thing is though..... you have tons of moddable armor choices in this game. It's not like they can force you to wear gear you don't like.... ...well.. except for Alec_Fortescue .... they will continue to /taunt him over hoods, because they can.
Andryah Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Look at the Conservator's Robe for the Jedi - at last! A plain brown, hood down robe .... WITH METAL SHOULDER PADS! Why? Pssst.... Classic Conservators Robe = no metal pads. Personally though... the robes without pads on body 1 and 2 females makes them look narrow shouldered. Different versions of gear and type for different genders and body types IMO.
