how does stat priority formula work?

Like people say Absorption = Shield > Defense >= Endurance > Strength >= Accuracy

Does that mean when you get to choose an armor, go for absorption, if it doesn't have it, go for defense, if not then endurance, and etc?

The answer you want depends on your class, your spec and your item budget.

Actually if you are looking for tanking stats it's easyer, there are many spreadsheets around that automatically calcolate the best setup for you.

If you are interested in optimizing dps then it's much more complicate. Many prefer not to delve too much into it and just go for the easy formula "Surge and crit to softcap then power".

That is what it means, but it's a little more complicated than just reading it like that.

The more of a stat you get, the less beneficial each new point of that stat is, and there comes a point where you really get a small amount of benefit from increasing it.

It is definitely possible to get all shield rating and absorb with no defense at all. That is a mistake, because if you did that, most of the last points of shield rating and absorb rating you got would give only a tiny amount of protection. If you had gotten defense rating instead, you'd get a very large increase in dodge % (comparatively) for the same number of stat points.

In general, you don't want shield rating, absorb rating, defense rating to be too out of synch with each other.

According to that formula, Absorption and Shield have equal priority.

Once Absorption and Shield Chance reach 50%, you prioritize Defense until it reaches 15% chance (and Endurance).

Then Strength (and Accuracy, until it reaches 110% hit chance).
