Newbie PvP Questions

I'm not big on PvP, but it helps pass the time when none of my buddies are around, and now that I'm 50 I want to make sure I'm pulling my weight. I've got the basics down: move as a group, defend things instead of chasing people, call incoming baddies, stick with the ball in Hutball and whatnot. However, I have (embarrassingly) failed to find the answers to the following questions, and would appreciate de-noob-ification by anyone who has the answers!

1) In Novare Coast the nodes have 8 bars on them. When all 8 bars are your color, it attacks the enemy bunker. When all 8 are the foe's color, it attacks your bunker. Who has control of a given turret when the bar was previously 8 of your color, but the enemies manage to get 6 of their color (with 2 of yours remaining) showing?

2) In Huttball there is a node on the ground that sends you flying. I cannot seem to figure out how to predict which way it will send me. It doesn't seem to send you in the direction you were moving. Is it just random?

3) Assuming people are working together in Void Star, is it a good idea for me (as a Trooper healer) to go with the small group that breaks off (usually a few stealthy types) to go to the other door, or am I just blowing their cover? Should I stick with healing the large group that attacks the targeted door?

4) It seems like the naming conventions for each map can be confusing, because you can start for two positions. I've heard folks call out for help from "left" in Civil War and Void Star but mean, depending on who is shouting, either the east or west node. Throw in "snow" and "grass" for good measure, and you have half a dozen people each calling it something else. Is there a reason why we don't just use map directions?

5) When I was leveling up, at the end of a map, even when we got stomped into the ground, most folks would throw a "gg =)" or "good game" or "at least we tried" in there. Once I hit 50, I noticed most people were using "gg" in a sarcastic sort of way. I'd been adding my customary "good match" into /ops while the scoreboard ticked down: is that a pvp social mistake? I certainly didn't want to come off as rude or sarcastic!

6) I will inevitably think of something else right after I hit submit new thread. Thank you guys for any answers you can throw my way!

first of all, welcome to the PvP side of the game, which can be both frustrating and exhilirating at the same time.

A general piece of advice would be to find other people you see often in warzones and that you appreciate enough to group with. As a healer, you're often targeted to death. Having a tank or even a dps watching your back will boost your survivability tremendously.

1) Novare coast. As long as the turret conversion bar is not full, it keeps shooting at the tower that it's been aimed at. Meaning that if your team captured it, and the opposing team manages somehow to convert 6 bars out of 8, the turret is still yours.

Defending is therefore easier than capturing a turret, but the attacking team has the advantage of initiative (unless your team is organized well enough to announce incoming attacks or even to feint)

2) the air vents in huttball are completely random, as far as I know. It's like trusting your fate in the hands of the Chaos gods, in an orcish way (I guess it's a nod to Warhammer's Bloodbowl)

3) it really depends on the team. As a general rule, try to stick with whoever protects you in your team, as it shows that this person has a clue and you can develop strategies together. For example, as a healer being focused all the time, you can play on this "weakness" to goad the ennemies into chasing you away from the doors, and letting a teammate sneak behind them to capture it. It works also on other warzones, as long as you are able to keep them chasing for a while (use your cc, slow, kite etc...)

4) I use east and west myself but there is no real convention, unfortunately. Again, playing with the same people will allow for better communication over time, and thus improves your team efficiency.

5) it's really difficult to know how your "good game" is perceived as you have no idea who you're playing with, so don't fuss about it. Again, playing in a team will also make it easier to get to know the other persons. But personally, I think it is always good to throw a nice comment (instead of the hate and trash talk).

Last but not least, remember that healing in warzones is difficult. Everyone in the enemy team will want you dead, and sometimes your team won't seem to give a damn.

Find good players who protect their healers (while still playing the objectives of course).

I've seen a tank + healer pair holding four or five opponents in combat for 20, 30 seconds. More if the enemy is clueless. These precious 30 seconds can often make the difference for the rest of the team as they're six fighting against three, increasing their chance of a capture. Or the 30 seconds would allow for reinforcements to arrive.

Good luck in pvp!

Thank you for the thorough answers! As promised, I was half way through reading them when I realized I managed to leave out the question that started it all in my head:

Do threat-reducing abilities, like a Trooper's Diversion ability that lowers threat to all current enemies, do anything in PvP?

Nope, only helps against NPCs, not live players.

I can't really consider your question list above newbish. I'll bet a lot of people that have had 50s for a long time were wondering about some or all of those. Me included :rak_03:

About the huttball air vents, I don't think they're random. Having tested it a bunch of times, I can get lifted in the direction I want if I hit them carefully. I find brushing the edge and "corner" of an individual vent makes it controllable. Just running onto one in the middle of it (one of the 3 vents in each cluster I mean) typically ends up with a random lift.

Edit: Eh, meant to edit into 1st post, not double D'oh.

If you can't stealth don't go where the stealthed players go. Because you will draw attention so that more enemies might show up on that side and by doing so ruin the chance for the stealthed players. I am one of those stealth players, and I can tell you that everytime I see someone running with the stealthed players I think s/he is an idiot. So, be smart and let them do their thing, while you keep the rest of your team alive.

4) If you want to start an argument, try to convince someone to change what they call things. You should see the huge threads in the PvP forum about Grass and Snow :D

Throwing out a "GG" or "At least we tried" is cool, just be careful that you don't use them at inappropriate times or people will get mad. (You got stomped, people farmed defence medals, etc.) But I see people using /say for "GG" when the match was close and the other side barely won or lost. Acknowledging a good fight is always good form in my opinion.
