Petnil
Imagine no stats on gear. All hardmode dungeons would be as hard on the day you get lv 50, as they are when you´ve been lv 50 a year. The drops would be the same but there would be no stats on any of the armor. The daily dungeon quest would give commendations to use on gear or mount or pets or whatever. Pvp would be the same. You would fight for gear that only would change your looks. For titles, mounts, pets and fluff like that. I´d still play. I would probably even enjoy it more since i mainly do hard mode dungeons, and they get boring when you outgear them. So, would you still play if there was no bonus exept other looks or titles or some other fluff ?
Andryah
Nope. That does not work for me, and most people would probably rebel against it (no matter what they might boast in a gaming forum otherwise). TSW does a sort of half-way approach to this (you have gear but it's separate from your outfit that people see you in), coupled with horizontal progression, and that is about as extreme as I would tolerate. Some people in TSW can't even cope with that much change honestly.
UltimateLemon
Sounds like Champions Online when it first came out. The gear pretty much had next to no benefit to it in terms of stats.
DorkTrooper
I like gear progression, just as I enjoy leveling. Not sure if I'd still play (sub) without it. I know I'm not interested in playing GW2...

Etapi
Didn't someone ask this same question on MMO champion. It is really a very unrealistic idea. For most people, there would never be a reason to play if you couldn't upgrade your gear.
Petnil
I like gearprogression too. But as you get better gear, you end up outgearing dungeons and that makes them boring imo. Also it would probably make balancing easier for the pvp crowd. I think there´s a lot of things to be said about less fokus on gear. Imo there are more positives than negatives. TheRealCandyMan
What would even be the point of playing if stats had to gear? There would be no reason to do any FP/Quest/OP more than once...
Costello
Ultimately this is what happens in the end. You get the top gear from that activity and have no reason to go back. Whether its HM FP, Ops, HM Ops or HM new Ops you get the top tier of gear and you have to find a reason to go back into that aspect of the game. If you removed it I think you would find people would have a hard time working out what they are doing trying fighting through the 10th group of elites that we nicely call trash mobs. To get to a boss that either bugs or mechanics the party to death. Only now its harder cause you aren't over geared for it. So harder and with no reward. The story is good but once would be all that I would be looking to play through it.
Thornsbane
No, GW2 has made me realise how superior gear progression, and the holy trinity are. Without progression a game becomes stagnant. Thats whats happening in GW2, there is still the grind, but for no reason but appearance so.....why bother. Progression also gives the idesa of a 'journey'. You hit 50 and you 'make your way' through the HM FP's, through Eternity Vault and Karraga's Palace, then onto EC etc. Just doing everything straight away makes it like a shooter FPS. Hambunctious
I'd probably like it better with no stats, or at least universal stats with different ways to set your armor rating with different resists. This isn't some magic based game. Armor should mostly be about resisting attacks, filtering the air, and staying at a optimal temperature. Addons to the armors would provide things like jet boosts, flame throwers, missiles, etc. Edited October 3, 2012 by Hambunctious

Sure, Played for years and years and years with out gear score and Gear > Skill mentality and honestly miss it! But I still like a few really nice items/gear. Just want them to be rare and very uncommon so every single player doesnt have them. IE: So they are special But WOW changed that culture and the new to MMORPGs think gear > Skill the way to go so dont see it changing anytime soon until some Developers get a pair. And of course those that rely on gear rather then skill will claim its the way to go and they speak for the majority and blah blah blah. Would welcome a move back to Skill > Gear design! Cabod
It would suit me just fine. Right now, I get booted from story-mode flashpoints because I am “under-geared”. Should not be the case as it is all purple level 50 crafted. Sorry, it is not worth my effort to play “gear-wars”. Gear should never be a restriction to content, but right now it is. If this continues, I am done with flashpoints and operations.

Ameepa
Yep I would still play and probably would even like it more. I'm so tired of endless gear grind systems and that the gear defines what you are allowed to do.
Grinstone
When I started playing City of Heroes after having played WoW for several years it was very novel, not to mention a huge relief, not to have to worry about my inventory or gear. That's right, there wasn't even any gear to have stats. The only thing you could do was slot improvements into individual powers. (Ultimately they changed this, but that's more detail than this post requires.) I wouldn't mind if stats on gear were removed, but they can't simply do that and let it be. Removing a system in a game like this without replacing it is a bad move, unless that particular system is so bad that removing it improves the overall experience. Ultimately most of us like to see our characters improve as we put more time into them. Both levels and gear have been used to this end since D&D first came out. Most games today are still designed around that principle. People have become so accustomed to the idea of gear progression that taking it away would leave a very noticeable vacuum. This isn't something that could be casually retrofitted onto an existing game. Let's not forget that if stats went away, you might as well toss out the entire crafting system. Bocek
The funny thing is that unless your doing HM Ops (Denova & TfB), there is no real gear progression either in this game. BW dropped the ball again with not having new gear drop in SM TfB. Not expecting it to be the most powerful gear, didn't even need to be at Campain level. Just something different to more Rakata. This crap drops in 4 ops now.
MalDeChagas
In a heartbeat, particularly if the pvp servers had full looting like early UO.

Gear grinds are really old and it'd be nice if some MMO developers would see that. However, it seems that everyone out there uses gear grinds and money sinks as a lazy form of endgame content. Blacklynx
Well since gear progression means squat to me i wouldn't be bothered at all. All i need is the mods for a armor that i like, and no, wasting my time repeating content to get gear so i can rip the mods off it's not fun either.
