I see workbenches in some of the cities/markets (like Hutta Market and Dromond Kaas near the city entrance) which offer to let me modify gear, but the orange gear can already be modified anywhere with ctrl-right-click.

Meanwhile I know the crew crafts items on workbenches, but this can be assigned anytime/anywhere from the crew menu.

So is there an actual need/use/benefit to the stationary workbenches?

I'm not 100% sure.

Is there a fee when you use the work bench?

that may be something.

There is also a quest that makes you use it ONCE.

They are legacy items that haven't been removed.

In previous beta versions, you had to go to a workbench to modify gear. They removed that requirement and you can do it anywhere.

They've not removed all of the workbenches as of this build.

You also use the workbenches to remove mods, which you can't just do anywhere.

Actually, I seem to be able to remove mods anywhere, no workbench required.

Yes, I've done it too. R click and it says: it costs X number of credits to remove, would you like to do so?

With the modification bench you can switch out your mods and they are not destroyed. If you just do it anywhere but at a bench the current mod in your piece is destroyed. I swap out mods via bench and save if needed or put in companion gear.

When you ctrl-right-click an orange item (anywhere, not just at a bench) and it has mods already in it, you can:

- drop a new mod right on top of an existing one, for free, but it destroys the existing mod

OR

- right-click the existing mod to remove it, without destroying it, but it costs a few credits

These two options are available anywhere regardless of the workbench.

Maybe the workbench lets you mod green/blue/purples? (I doubt it...)

Maybe the workbench lets you remove mods without paying?

Or maybe as said above it's just a remnant of when you couldn't mod anywhere...
