Vagnos
Well probably a noob question but.. will ask anyhow. what is the diminishing returns everyone talk about? how it effect crits? i hear if you got about 35% crit on Marauder you are deep into the DR ..true? what it acaullty do? Does DR effect other abilities otherwise? Edited May 12, 2012 by Vagnos
Natarii
Someone smarter than me will be able to come in with actual numbers and such, but I will help you understand what diminishing return IS. Basically, after a certain threshold in a given stat, additional points in that stat are significantly less effective. For example, if you were getting 1% crit for every X points of crit on gear, beyond 35% you'll get less than 0.5% additional crit for that same X value on more gear with crit. Pay no attention to the actual numbers, as they are completely off the top of my head and not supported by evidence; I use them only to make my point. Diminishing return can also be used with certain abilities. I'm not entirely sure if it works the same here, as I have not pvp'd all that much, but in that 'other' game, each time a player is effected by a 'crowd control' ability within a certain amount of time, each one is less effective until they are immune for a short time. This is another way diminishing returns can be applied.
Eternalnight
and there's not really a point where DR suddenly starts. It's a curve like that http://img9.mmo.mmo4arab.com/feature/swtor/site_sorc_guide/site_sorc_guide04_600.jpg Basically the higher the crit rating you had before the less crit % it will add per point of crit rating (or you could also kind of say it from the other perspective, the higher crit rating you had before, the more additional crit rating it would cost to get additional 1% crit) The soft caps are points when you have so much diminishing that you would get more benefit from some other stat. MMornard
Unless you're heavily into PvP, it's utterly irrelevant. I don't PvP at all, and I manage just fine in PvE without worrying about stuff like that. Like most games, you don't have to be perfectly optimized to be successful and have fun. Eternalnight
except it has nothing to do with pvp and certainly is not less useful in pve. Being fully optimized someone can actually benefit more of their full potential in certain pve environments.
MorgonKara
Basically it just means that you get better overall benefit from diversifying your bonus stats than by just focusing on stacking one stat. For example, instead of putting crit and surge on all your gear, try throwing in a few pieces with power and accuracy. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think DR effects attributes like Endurance or Presence, just bonus stats like power or defense etc. In other words, you want to stack your main attributes as high as possible but diversify your bonus stats. Blackardin
About halfway down in the provided link you will see a chart demonstrating diminishing returns. In short, what it means is that one will come to a point where the amount of points they put into a stat will return less and less results as the curve flattens out. http://mmo-mechanics.com/swtor/forums/Thread-The-Shield-Tech-Shield-Spec-Compendium The following link has an array of information regarding stats and mechanics. http://mmo-mechanics.com/swtor/forums/Forum-Game-Mechanics The site, Sithwarrior.com has a great amount of information on stats and mechanics.
