SWTOR Has Messed Up in A Lot of Places...

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to state I really like the game (the thread title is very misleading)! I want to change the thread title but it's not going through. The game has its pros and cons, and I do enjoy the game a lot but it's just that I believe that the game failed to captivate me musically. The topic of this thread is about the music of SWTOR.

One thing that highly disappoints me is the game's music!

Many of the music tracks of Star Wars are just plain epic. They just make the saga not only more interesting to watch, but more interesting to listen to. You can hear awesome climatic moments, beautiful and emotional parts, soothing and calm tracks, or just the compositions that make you feel like you're in front of a cantina listening to their catchy music that you just wanna dance to.

I feel like SWTOR's music just completely missed out on creating the music I wanted to hear. I would think this would just create more great music to add to the saga, but listening to the many pieces I feel like SWTOR did miss out musically.

In my honest opinion, a lot of these composers didn't fully grasp the concept of the music of Star Wars, and completely failed to compose what the music should sound like. Many of the pieces are filled with silent parts, and even though there are a few parts that do get you going, most of the tracks are filled with parts that just aren't captivating as it should be.

I really haven't seen any threads about the music, but I wanna hear what everyone thinks about it, and how it impacts their experience in-game—because I should know, music does play a major role in not only the games, but the shows, movies, and saga in general.

Agreed.

Too much of the music in this game is incidental--as opposed to ambient (like the music in KOTOR). I remember when they posted this great write-up in one of the developer blogs about the music and sound in SWTOR; they made it out to be one of the most important features of the game.

How does such an important feature fail to make an impression?

I understand that this is highly subjective and thus I respect your opinion, but...

The music work in this game is incredibly brilliant, and I am quite savvy when it comes to music, from Harsh Noise to Wagner...

Matter of fact, before giving up and starting graduating as an economist, I was a poor struggling piano artist

while there is music in the game, there isn't enough variety.

one of the first things i turned way down in Options, to be honest. Listening to a bit of 'Daydream Nation' while grinding Nar Shaddaa for the umpteenth time suits me in a way the game soundtrack never could.

While I agree that the music does not play often enough, I disagree with the OP about the quality of the new music composed for the game. A great deal of it sounds very Williams-esque and "Star Wars-y". There's a great deal of the original Saga music used in the class missions and many of the door missions, Flashpoints etc. I would like to see/hear more ambient music playing. Perhaps a travel music sequence while riding the flightpoint speeders or some ambient music while walking around the Fleet.

I'd also like to hear the Williams music in the space battle missions, mixed in with the new stuff. Hearing the Asteroid Field or the classic TIE Fighter Attack while dogfighting would be wonderful.

You do bring up a good point: this topic is highly subjective.

I'm just curious as to what others think of the game's music. I do respect everyone else's opinion, and I understand what may not appeal to one person may appeal to the other. :)

A lot of the music in game (during cutscenes) is actually from the prequel series. A lot of themes are edited slightly and blended with others. Equally a lot of the music is rehased from KOTOR I & II. There are a few new pieces in this game, but all the music I've heard so far is from the movies or previous games.

The music that is new though is actually good, it just doesn't fit the settings and themes sometimes. As a standalone it's got some brilliant themes that would better suit a movie.

I don't Remember If it was voss or Quesh but the ambient Music had me pumped while I was hacking and slashing

My way across the Map

Also some of the class quests have awesome music when i was running through An imperial

Star destroyer made Me Feel like there was a Real need to accomplish my mission with speed

The music is good. The real issue is that you barely get to hear it because it doesn't loop. You arrive on a planet, the awesome music plays for 2 minutes, and then you spend the next hour or two in silence listening to your own footsteps. Edited by Jenzali

I am pretty disappointed that the game does feel quite silent.

But it's not only the silence that bothers me, and again, I just feel disappointed with the music in general. I just wish something more captivating was composed.

And I did see someone post that a lot of the songs were taken from Episode I. I know because I was ripping the music onto my Xbox and I saw the music titles of the Episode 1 OST.

We're not talking about the John Williams montage we hear when we pop our heroic moment ability or pull the occasional Elite.

We're talking about the large swaths of silence between the occasional ambient tone. That's not music. That would be...large swaths of silence between the occasional ambient tone.

In complete agreement here.

Williams provided hours of awe inspiring tunes for this movie series, yet we only hear snippets of it once in a great while, and usually only the same few prequel tunes over and over. Where are the OT tracks? I can vaguely remember hearing a few clips of the OT "hero" theme during a heroic moment or two, or the great Mos Eisley track when you first load into Anchorhead, but overall it's just the new trilogy stuff or dead silence (far more of the latter).

When I leap into combat swinging a lightsaber or firing my wrist rockets, it'd be nice to hear that swelling Star Wars theme surge up to get the adrenaline pumping. Almost never does.

Who the hell overlooked using the ESB Asteroid Field theme during the space missions that involve... asteroid fields??

I think that the music is great - when it's on, which is hardly ever.

Bioware should go through each level and create far more music trigger points and a loop button that loops through the thematic music for each zone with an option for the 'dramatic/fight scene' music to play.

It's a little bit boring hearing double footsteps tapping along as the soundtrack to this game, often when I suspect that there's loads of good music sitting on our hard drives that doesn't get played enough...

Yeah the music could have been worked out better and more present but I like the KOTOR music references

Its not nearly as bad as you thread title though...

EDIT: I agree completely with the post above.

Not just episode I. There are themes from the other two of the prequel trilogy, such as: Jango's Escape (EP II -activated when you use a heroic moment) Bounty Hunters persuit (EP II - Space sequence) an edited rendition of Zam the assassin (the chase EP II) From EP III you have Battle of Heroes, Anakin's Betrayal, Anakin's Dark Deeds, The Immolation Scene and finally an edited segment from Ep I Anakin Defeats Sebulba.

These are just the tracks I picked up on during playtime. In addition with all the new music there are some fantastic pieces of work in there. Just many of them seem not to fit the scenes that play out in the game. Not to mention the lack of ongoing music or looped music in general.

Yeah, I wanna change the thread title because that is not the message I wanted to deliver for those scrolling through the GD.

I think that's part of the problem yes. It's just a detail but what I find a shame is that I hardly ever hear the famous 'Cantina band' tune. I heard it a few times on the fleet when soneone got their robot out and it played for 30 seconds or something.

You know, I've been trying to find it but I think Music is precisely the reason why SWTOR failed to draw me in like LoTRO did - which is another MMO based on an very established mythos. Shadows of Angmar music was excellent - it was one of the things that made the Shire so good. I'd go there just to hang out and do nothing but admire the atmosphere and music.

I've always appreciated good music. People look at me weird when I say Music is at or near the top things I consider in games. I want to hear the music of SWTOR, but it doesn't loop so I barely remember any of it aside from the Cantina music.

I'm glad to see you've said that. Music definitely takes the cake as one of the most important things of a game. Makes you appreciate the game (or any movie or show you watch) a lot more. :)
