SirSensi
Which spec for PvP/PvE? I'm only a level 15 atm, but would like to know which way to go with my Assassin as I am oddly enjoing the gameplay. I was Madness, but reset before the server maint. this morning. I understand, but with most classes here there is one spec that seems more viable (eg pre-1.2 Jedi Guardians favored Focus rather than Vigilance, or Defense). darkenwolf
As I understand it (I leveled Madness 1-50) Darkness doesn't really come into its own until late 30s early 40s with Harnessed Darkness. I hear most people saying to level as Deception or Madness. Since I leveled Madness I'll comment on that a bit further. Madness comes into its own, and gets a pretty big boost, at 25 once you have Death Field, 2/2 Fanaticism, and Raze. I'd then suggest popping over and picking up 2/2 Insulation and 3/3 Charge Mastery through 30, then switch back to Madness til Creeping Terror, then spend the remaining as you will or swap to Darkness at 40. I tore everything apart as Madness, just keep Khem geared and you're fine - he's basically an extra health bar. You can use him all the way up til you get Talos if you like. Heroic 2's were no problem solo. Bear in mind that Assassins generally, and Madness specifically, are very gear dependent. I'd recommend getting as many oranges as you can find and Cyberteching your way through. Purple your Armorings every 6 levels, green your mods every chance you get, and purple Ear every 6 levels if you can manage it. If you have an artificer friend available, try to get purple Enhancements/Hilt every time you swap Armorings. If not, use planet comms/GTN for hilts and enhancements. I found doing that much more effective than Synthweaving my way up to 50. EDIT: Incidentally, I run Madness in end game PvP (spec linked in sig). I've tried all three specs now, and I just came off another week stint running Darkness, and I always come back to Madness every time. Darkness I find to be boring, I don't like the playstyle much and I feel very limited in playing objectives. Deception is fun and works, can be tricky to pull off. I just have a blast playing Madness. All the specs are viable and my time running a DPS Darkness build in PvP has cemented my opinion that Darkness is over-hyped in its dominance as "THE" Assassin spec. Pick the spec you have fun playing because you will be playing it a LOT. Grinding Rated Comms takes for-freaking-ever. I went deception from 1-50 very fun killed fast against hard bosses at times used dark charge mode mostly leveled with Ashara and used Talos on hard bosses as well. SirSensi
@ Darkenwolf Thank you for the valuble advise. I did start out as Madness, mainly reset it because I was unsure of its viablitiy in PvP/ PvE. I didnt find it difficult to play in PvE.

Not really. Each one is just good for something different. Personally I like all 3 trees for guardian, although I play vigilance.
SirSensi
Not really. Each one is just good for something different. Personally I like all 3 trees for guardian, although I play vigilance. I play a vig guard as well, and most of the guardian community favored the Focus tree vs the other two pre 1.2 is what I was trying to point out, and from their statements it was because Focus Guardian was more bursty and topped dmg charts etc. I ignored them and went vig since day 1 and havent really looked at many other trees. I did spec Focus for like a day, but didnt like the rotation.

I did spec Focus for like a day, but didnt like the rotation. I knew it would top dps charts when I looked at it even before the game came out. But it doesn't do damage the way I like to - it's focused around a single uber-powerful area attack. So yeah, in pvp and pve I can hit a group crazy hard - I just can't take on a single target the same way. No where near as effectively either. The other thing I don't like as much about the focus spec is that it is all about force sweep. I usually don't like specs that derive all of their power from a single ability. I don't always mind ranged specs that do that (like the shared tree for trooper) but I don't like it much for melee. I tried it and wasn't a huge fan - the vigilance tree fits my style much better. The focus spec is plently powerful; but it's not as useful in as many scenarios as vigilance is I think.
SirSensi
Wanted to take the time out to reply and thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. Your opinions, advice, and insight were greatly appreciated. Spec'd to Deception, absolutely enjoy it, burst is great and fits well with my play style. Haflax
Yes interesting post. Thanks for the thoughts from everyone. I am also a new player trying to determin how to spec. And was looking at madness, but all I had every heard people say was that 31/0/10 was the only way to go. Good to read some different points of view.
