CharleyDanger
Bioware has done a great job at looking at other successful MMOs and filling their game with what has worked in the past. Yet when I look at SWTOR PvP I cant help but see problems that were fixed years ago by games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Halo. The fact that Cod, BF, and Halo are FPS games means nothing. The problem with MMO PvP are fundamental PvP problems. You have to understand that games like CoD are stand alone PvP games. Games like Battlefield have nothing to fall back on. If CoD and Battlefield fail in their PvP the game fails, period. Also CoD and BF are not just the most successful PvP ever made. They are the most successful video games ever made. If you take the above into account how could you not look at these games when attempting to put together a solid PvP game. I will now list some of the current SWTOR PvP issues and then list how CoD, BF, and Halo fixed the issue years ago. Premades vs pugs: Who likes solo PvPing against a coordinated team.. Nobody. Years ago a "Mercenary Mode" was implemented that did not allow a group of players to que together. Easy fix, how could a PvP game not have this years after it was fixed? PvP Gear Progression: Many argue that a gear advantage is not true to what PvP is supposed to be. In no FPS PvP game will you find a major gear advantage. Yet this is an MMORPG and I understand why much of the community likes the gear progression. Years ago a mode called "Barebones" was introduced. This mode stripped away everything that was not a core part of combat. This mode allowed players to truly test skill vs skill. I think an MMO version would be great. Everyone with the exact same stats and abilities. You would have to tweak it to be a post 50 mode (So everyone had the same abilities) or you could have it to where even a lvl 10 is given all of their future abilities for that WZ. I like that idea because it would also allow low lvl players to preview upcoming abilities. Class Imbalance I think the PvE part of MMOs kind of messes up the PvP balancing. So many abilities, and so many different scenarios. I thinks its a daunting task to try to balance this in arena that puts player vs player. If you play a game like CoD or BF you will notice that a lot of the abilities that can be used in the story mode cannot be used in the PvP mode. In games like CoD and BF the story mode is separate from the PvP. Why not have a lvling system for PvP that is separate from PvE. Why not have abilities just for PvP, and abilities that are just for PvE. If you had PvP only abilities it would be no problem making them balanced. PvE is so different from PvP. It makes no sense that PvP and PvE have the exact same abilities and mechanics. The three biggest issues in MMO PvP became a non-issues a long long time ago for FPS Multiplayer. All MMOs should take note of that fact. Edited April 15, 2012 by CharleyDanger
DirtyDiggler
they already pulled from FPS games with the whole warzone pvp system.... true mmorpgs are open world pvp where level and gear decide everything. And ganking is alot of what is considered pvp... I i like both, and i dont think themeparks do well trying to make a mix between the two.... I think WoW used the arena thing where its 2v2 or 3v3. From what I understand no MMOs has gotten world PvP just right. I dont see how ganking gives anyone any satisfaction, but I do enjoy looking over my shoulder. Idk, I would like to see a stand alone world PvP MMO. I also think it would be one the hardest games to make ever lol.
