DPCummerbund
I'm used to playing other MMOs that allow you to choose different worlds/realms to level up in (or at least some worlds that overlap by several levels). It looks like SWTOR has a straight progression from one planet to the next. This won't be a big deal as long as there's a variety of quests to choose from - but to far, I've had to take pretty much every quest I see to level up enough. Does this stay true throughout the game, or can you be more choosy about which quests you want?
DeutschGamer
Its about the same, you need to take as many quests on to level up. There isn't any point in being choosy either, there is little reason not to take a quest, unless you are being lazy and don't want to do something. Or you could just leave one planet earlier and head to the next. It isn't as clear cut as some other MMOs where two areas will have the exact same level range, but rather in SWTOR their ranges will overlap. Use the galaxy map to see those ranges. BUT, all that said, why not just play the game as the story MMO it is. Follow your class quest where it leads you, and pick up and follow the quests on the planets you're on. Keep an eye on your level compared to the quests you're being given and if you think you're over-levelling then you can start skipping planet quests. Otherwise, just do everything you come across. BrknSoul
One small tip: Do Class Missions when you're in the area to do them, don't leave them until last. Class Missions and other missions seem to 'gel' together pretty well. If you leave your Class Mission until last, you'll find yourself going back and forth quite a bit. Unlike most Single Player games, completing Class Missions first doesn't 'lock out' any side missions, as Class Missions tend to take place in a phase (instance) specifically for your character. TarisKnight
Why choose quests? Why not do everything? Do you read a literature novel and select only some pages for reading?

If you do all the "bonus" quests that pop up while you're doing the ones that you're given by NPCs, plus a modicum of some or all of: Heroics; Space Missions; PvP; FP; Bonus Series quests, you can probably just do the storyline quests (plus any that are in a direct line to the storyline) on alternate planets. The storyline quests are pretty much mandatory for you to get your Companions and complete your character's story (which is 40% of the USP of the game), but you can probably leave enough quests and optional content that another Alt from the same side chan have a significantly different experience. You will get to be picky. Chances are you will drop many you find unnapealing 3. Mix and match. Do the class quest and run space mission ( great at lower levels ) + warzones. 4. Heroic content and Flaspoint are the other stuff to look into. These are more challenging content but offer much better gear. Not the most optimum for XP but lotsa fun. DPCummerbund
Why choose quests? Why not do everything? Do you read a literature novel and select only some pages for reading? I've skipped quests in other games for a variety of reasons. Usually, it's from over-leveling, or I finish all the quests in one area but missed one and don't want to bother going back. My real reason for asking, though, is I like to play a lot of alts, and if I have to play through most of the quests with my main, it doesn't leave me much that's "new" for my alts (except class quests). As much as I'm loving this game, it doesn't seem very alt-friendly compared to others I've played - I really like playing alts just for a variety of styles (melee vs ranged, etc.) and for crafting purposes. OTOH, I suppose I could play Emp side for an alt- are there any good or bad reasons for that?
Owsley
It's a Themepark MMO not a Sandbox. You really have to do them in order to get the most out of the game.
shama
IMy real reason for asking, though, is I like to play a lot of alts, and if I have to play through most of the quests with my main, it doesn't leave me much that's "new" for my alts (except class quests). As someone else said, if you mix in some regular flashpoints, space combat and PvP then you will find you can skip quests (or even whole planets) and leave them for a later alt to play through. I didn't purposefully get over-levelled, but with my first char I arrived on Alderaan for my class quest right on the upper limit of the planet so decided to just do the class quest and skip the rest. My next alt then choose to skip most of my home planet knowing I'd have a full planets worth of quests on Alderaan. So mix in some other sources of XP and you should find (like 90% of people*) that if you were to try and do everything on one character you'll be over-levelled ... so might as well skip stuff and save it for an alt to discover. *For some reason the other 10% still swear blind it is possible to be under-levelled even if they complete every quest. YMMV
Skodan
the story is fairly straight forward, i would have liked it to be open to choices, similar to kotor in the essence that you could go to worlds in any order (although this would probably require the game to be level-less, similar to how swg was). or they could have had multiple planets within the same area of levels to how lotro has done it. in their way you have 3 starter areas, then the class story progresses but world quests usually have 2 or 3 areas with similar levels
