Falser Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) The logic: Datacrons are neat content. They are fun little easter egg type finds that are incentivized for players via a hefty chunk of lore and a minor stat bonus that appeals to us silly min-maxers. But, here is the personal reality for a lot of us. After obtaining a datacron once on a character and leveling an alt that needs that same Datacron, that easter egg tends to be stale and tedious to obtain. They are put in an out of the way place (understandably) and sometimes require the help of others, or other various quirks to obtain. There's not a ton of ability required in getting these at this point either. Let's be honest. The vast majority of us are going to get online and find some coordinates or a video to remind us of where things are, and do it that way. But, there is a better way than this huge inconvenience every time someone levels an alt and wants datacrons... The proposal: Create a legacy perk to allow other characters to benefit from datacrons already obtained by other characters in that character's legacy. These datacrons, +10 included, even when stacked on themselves, do not create a big enough stat bonus to do anything but help people level up a minor amount. They are not substantial enough to unbalance anything in any meaningful way. It would be nothing short of a total quality of life buff. From a lore standpoint, this works perfectly. It's as if one character has passed down their codex and some of the most important knowledge in it to another character. Simple. Various Methods of Implementation: There's a few ways this can be done. The most bare-bones and basic being of course to simply make all collected datacrons count for all characters in legacy at all times. But, alas, the player-base is a fickle thing and many probably aren't going to go for this with cries of "Balance!" and "Unfairness!" So, alternatively, I propose another means of implementation: Either every 10 levels, or every new planet the character sets foot on, grant the corresponding stat datacrons for that tier of the game's leveling content. For example, if my bounty hunter alt hits level 10, give him the datacrons my 50 agent has already collected from Hutta and Dromund Kaas. When he hits 20, grant him the datacron benefits from Balmorra and Nar Shadaa, etc. Alternatively, you could just grant characters the datacrons from planets as they set foot on them so long as they're within or above that planet's leveling range and another character in the legacy has previously obtained them. When it comes to Matrix shards, I do believe there's a level requirement on the created cubes already, so that problem solves itself with restrictions already in place. If I'm mistaken, then simply removing the Matrix Shards from this equation is entirely acceptable and understandable. Obtaining three things is still infinitely better than obtaining thirty. The Disclaimer: To be clear, this has nothing to do with being lazy. I, like many others that enjoy this idea, will be getting my datacrons whether this is implemented to make it more convenient or not. It's simply an issue of not wanting to repeat content over and over that consists of going somewhere far out of the way and clicking a box to trigger a cutscene we're going to spacebar through because we've seen it over twenty times. This idea seems to have a lot of traction in the community, and it's something that many of us would appreciate being implemented. I know a couple of you Devs are Redditors, so there is a reddit thread here: that showcases the support for this idea. Whether or not you implement this or take it into consideration, we know you hear us Bioware, and we thank you for a fun and enjoyable game. P.S. Even still, it would be lovely to see some dev love in this thread acknowledging that it's being considered one way or the other Edited April 10, 2012 by Falser
BenjaminminU Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I think it should be a legacy perk so unlock them in legacy, so then on a new character when you set foot on the new planet, you unlock the datacrons there instantly.
livnthedream Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 if this were to be implemented the only way i would be ok with it is tied to level. with that being said, i am not ok with this idea. besides the fact that they are mostly optional, i dont feel these kinds of combat bonuses should be tied to legacy. some of the stuff, like the green matrix shard from belsavis for instance also requires the farming of the cubes, which would mostly invalidate that content except for very new players.

Why would it need to be tied to level? If you think about all the legacy bonus stuff that is being given (stuff like bonus to stats for your other character having maxed a companion or features like being able to use both classes buffs), they're essentially making PVE as easy as possible, for the lower levels. RP wise it would make sense that your father or whoever your legacy is related to, could relay information of a datacron since datacrons are for non-force sensitive people anyways, or even have the information transmitted through whatever genetic code. They could also give you the shards they don't use or have never used. You also have to realize that "invalidating" content isn't really a valid excuse with the direction they are going. "Grats on your BM title/gear guys. We're going to patch it to make it so you can hit BM within a week of 50 instead of a month, and also, with the next patch, we're going to make it so the grind is free. Cool? Thanks for your sub fee." At the least, there should be a perk to have previously discovered Datacrons marked on your map for your legacy characters.

Falser Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 Your +60 stats claim is a misnomer. That's +60 spread across ALL stats, not one stat. By the time you take the two stats that don't contribute to the respective class and take them out, then disperse the stats appropriately, it's really not that big of a deal. There's also the caveat of offering these bonuses in tiered levels as suggested. When this is taken into account, your argument about "destroying the leveling curve" completely goes out the window. For that matter, we're going to be getting bigger stat bonuses from the legacy gear we can pass down than this suggestion, so keep that in mind.

Falser Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) It is not. http://www.swtor-spy.com/datacrons/ Add that up. Again, even with that aside, granting the bonuses in tiers makes this argument moot. Edited April 10, 2012 by Falser
Morvidus Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 A good way to implement this is to have a "Legacy Datacron" in all of the spaceports with a level requirement based on the planet. When you land your new legacy character on a planet for the first time, they can simply access the information their predecessors have learned from the world they're on.
livnthedream Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 It is not. http://www.swtor-spy.com/datacrons/ Add that up. sorry, its 50 to all stats. when i added them before i must have counted +10 twice.

I think this is another fantastic implementation idea. Five stars!
JediExileSpencer Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I am on board with this idea. I have many datacrons, like Willpower on my Gunslinger, that are useless to me and it would be cool if I did not have to find it again when I roll my Consular.

I got several I didn't need on my agent just to check the lore and experience it one time. But I really just don't care to go on the tedious quest to click a box again on another character. Or two. Or three... Glad we're on the same page!
ZaRree Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Yeah sounds like a good idea, would be nice if they implemented this with legacy. Got so many Datacrons that i have no use for on my main....
Sendai_S Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I disagree with the proposal whole heartedly. The datacrons are a part of the exploration game. If you level more than one character - each character should have to go to each datacron. This arguement falls into the "I want everything easy" mindset that permeates the younger generations of the gaming community. At most - I think Legacy levels could maybe unlock 5 of them for you, but to get them all for free - on all your toons - just cause you did it once and you can't be bothered to swing by those places when you level a new toon cause all you WANT to do is get to 50? No. No way. Play the damn game. <<This message has been brought to you by "My two cents".>>
Draogon Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 +1 to add this to Legacy, i want to better my character as much as possible and every little bit counts, but it is absolutely horrible having to do this over and over per character and is in no way "fun". This is a game after all, last i checked games were for enjoyment.
