aucottuk Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Hey folks, I'm thinking of updating my systems RAM to 8gb, but I'm not sure of the difference it will make. Could anybody give me an answer? My current specs are: i7 processor 4gb ram GeForce 425m 1gb Windows 7 Thanks in advance
Tsaritsin Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 RAM is very very cheap atm, about £40 for 8gig of DDR3, So dont worry about whether it will make a diff, Just get it,
Denyus Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Indeed and next time you are after hardware get a new graphic card as well and you are all set for a wile
aucottuk Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Thanks guys, but in not sure how to change a graphics card in a laptop, if at all? :s
Grabss Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 If your Win7 is 32 bit, going to 8gb will help not. If it is 64 bit, 8gb will make a very big improvement over all, as most laptops are IO bound and can use the extra ram. If you are 32 bit, upgrade to 64 and get the ram.
ShaunGB Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 You will need to make sure your Win 7 is 64 bit for it to see 8gb of ram. Also i'm not sure but if star wars is 32 bit then it won't address 8gb of ram only 4.*.
Toxicshadow Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 In the early days SWTOR seemed to have a memory leak and I often saw my memory usage over 5000MB but that was only after ~8hrs of play. This doesnt seem to be the case anymore. I would say if you can afford it there is no reason not to get it but I wouldn't get your hopes up about any sort of performace gain from it. Just because it is there it doesn't mean that it will be used. The only way that you may see a reasonable improvement is if you start experimenting with RAM drives. There is a thread on this forum somewhere for it.
Elenia Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) It won't make a single difference in performance for swtor. More RAM only allows you to multitask more. Except if you're thinking to play swtor, create 3D models and run 10x 1080p movies at the very same time, it's not needed. Don't waste your money. This is a big marketing trick atm where stores sell you these 8-16 GB RAM systems with an i3 processor and a 5400 RPM hard drive -You're getting ripped off- Cheers Edited April 9, 2012 by Elenia
VainEldritch Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 As others have said,if you system can hadle 8gb, do it. I have 8gb and sytem monitor tells me when SWTOR is running I'm using 45-55% RAM so 4gb + will get used by system and SWTOR, the rest is there if you want to run other stuff in BG.
Lancs Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 My system uses hardly anything with SWTOR but due to their crappy engine which they modded beyond recognition the game shall always look and run crap until they sort out the mess. Come on BioWare get it sorted.
Lord_Ravenhurst Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) If you are running a 32 Bit Windows version, 8 GIG are useless. Even if you are running the x64 version of Windows7, the game won´t benefit at all, because there is no 64bit client for SWTOR. More than 3.2 GIG RAM won´t be used by the game. you´d be ok with 4 GIG total system memory, except you want to have open 10 other programs at the same time. Edited April 9, 2012 by Lord_Ravenhurst
