Shelrabbi
...environmental cover is being removed in 1.2, or if snipers won't be able to use it, or if a toggle switch will allow us to disallow it?
Lithy
there is alrdy a 'toggle' u never have to use it if u dont want to. Use the crouch skill instead. You can bind it to a key in preferences menu.
theangryllama
Nope, what is being removed is some natural cover has an 'integrity' buff that can be hard to miss. Enough shots hit this cover and it breaks knocking you out of cover and meaning you can't take cover in that location again. Interesting in theory, terrible in practice
Shelrabbi
If you just use crouch you don't get the defensive benefits, or the cover bar. Or am I wrong there?
hadoken
If you just use crouch you don't get the defensive benefits, or the cover bar. Or am I wrong there? Completely wrong. Hard (environmental) cover just gives you close to 100% ranged defense when you're not firing. Not as useful really as it sounds. Not as useful really as it sounds. It's very useful against other snipers and mercenaries, especially in huttball where there is pretty much always a hard cover angle. Bonus if you use the ability to move up or down a level. Edited April 10, 2012 by Enexemander

Enexemander
It's almost completely useless against mercenaries, actually. Ranged defense does absolutely nothing against tech attacks. A lesser portion of their damage is actually tech attacks than you might think in PvP. They tend to like to use unload and rail shot. These are the big hitters for them in pyro spec. Most good mercenary pvpers are pyro. Arsenal is a very bad pvp spec, but even so, use distraction on their tracer missile and they have to use either unload or power shot- both are fully affected by cover. If you are in cover and negating their big hitting abilities while interrupting tracer missile (if they're arsenal) you will win the dps race hands down if you go toe to toe. I'm sure all that makes sense in the fantasy land you live in, but in reality it doesn't work that way. You only get the benefit when you're not firing. If you're not firing you're losing the dps race to their tech attacks. The two big hits you list also have cooldowns, guess what they're doing while those are on cooldown? Tech attacks. Cover in general is only useful vs other snipers/gunslingers. Hard cover is practically useless in pvp because you're always firing (or you're dead anyway). If you see them use Unload, just don't fire for the duration while they miss and you regen energy (or use an instant attack and only take maybe one tick of damage). It also really ruins a merc's day to miss on rail shot. I mean, you're going to be in cover anyway. Why not take the option that gives the most benefit? Mostly because you've repeatedly shown in the various threads I see you post in that you don't really have a clue what you're talking about and think snipers are god's gift to pvp. Then you bring up that pyros are the most common and dangerous mercenaries out there (they aren't, and I question if you even pvp with that statement). Really if you're going to go around 'giving advice' you should probably get your facts straight and also understand what it is cover really works well against in reality: almost nothing. Cover is a great mechanic in pve and is fun to level with. In pvp it is a burden that you have to use in order to access your core abilities, and nothing more. Ah, because I have a different opinion than you, you decide to be a jerk. Well, nothing I have said about mercenaries and cover is incorrect. I happen to have a 50 mercenary that I pvp with. If you are arsenal, your tracer missile will be interrupted by competent players and any melee worth his salt will kick your face in. They are also highly subject to LOS and, in general, are very easy to shut down. To the OP, cover is useful against some key abilities of mercenaries and many abilities of snipers. Natural cover is much more effective. I hope you have great luck in your sniping adventures! Edited April 10, 2012 by Enexemander
