Tips for a complete MMORPG newb? (What abilities to use)

SWTOR is my first MMORPG ever and I'm having a blast, but I do not do well in warzones because I have no clue how to be properly effective. My assassin is level 41 in the "Darkness" tree.

Can someone give me advice on the order of abilities I should use to be effective in PVP warzones? Usually I just run straight up to enemies and attack

Read that. You can skip the gear section for now, but read the spec and rotation sections. That should make you set for life.

Edit: some general tips, I guess. You have guard, so use it to protect the healer/ball carrier/important guy. You usually end up carrying the ball / defending objectives, but if you gear for dps, you can also effectively pressure the healers and just kill the other guys. Always remember to get full use of your control abilities - electrocute, whirlwind, overload, spike. Your most used abilities have 10m range, and wither slows, so you can somewhat effectively kite melee. Force speed and force pull gives great distance closers. You basically have awesome utility, and should have no fear going 1v1 against any class.

its really not importent what toon your playing atm, if this is your first mmo, then there a are somethings you need to get down in pvp.

Position, your own, your teams aswell as the enemies. For instance if you were healing (I know you are not, just an example) then dont stand in the open where the enemy team can reach you easy. As assassin, its more likely that you need to move out of LoS (Line of sight) to avoid taking dmg from rangede dps class's while your guarding a node/door/turret for instance.

Dont end up like 90% of the ppl who think they know how to pvp, by that I mean play to win, if your doing huttball, play for goals not for kills.

You need to learn what every class are capable off and what animations goes with their abilities. This is needed in every mmo if you want to do well in pvp. It lets you know whats they are doing and how to deal with it.

These are the very very basics, as for rotationts etc. there are plentyfull of topics around that can teach you that, or you can watch vod's of ppl playing. I wont recommend that you use "pvp movies" as a guide, since 9/10 they are meant as entertainment so they dont portray the class very well, you mainly see highcrits etc. So you dont really get to see how games typical looks.

Any way to round it off heres a link to a pvp session I had some time ago, nothing fancy but you might be able to pickup a few tricks seeing as your new.

Best of luck and I hoped this helped abit, even if I might have made it more confusing.

General Rules:

> Remember your objectives - don't farm kills, don't fight off point. You'll find you have greater survivability on point (i.e. at the turret, on the door, with the ball handler) as you're more likely to have a healer nearby and plenty of AoE (area of effect) dumps to help you out.

> Kill the bloody healer - don't wail on the guy in front of you if six paces away a healer is keeping him/her alive. Healers are very recognisable, look for the guy with a cast bar perpetually over his/her head and green stuff flying form their fingers/gun/whatever. At the very least swap targets to interrupt those troublesome heals, or CC (crowd control, e.g. stun, slow movement etc) them so they are out of range or incapacitated.

> Mobility is key in PvP, so take away your enemies - as noted above, use your CC abilities whenever possible.

> Remember you are in a TEAM - use your class abilities to help out your teammates. In your case you have a whole range of protection effects, use them! Your taunts reduce the dmg of your opponents, use them whenever you can (this is also a very easy way to farm medals), and as noted above use your guard on the most vulnerable target (generally the healer or ball carrier).

> Know thy enemy - in my opinion, you only get really good at PvP when you have played a number of classes. Try out a powertech, a marauder, an operative, find out what their rotations are, where they position themselves, what their team role is. That way you always know what your opponent is doing and how to counter it, and even what they are going to do next.

Most importantly, practice! Everyone starts as a noob, that only changes once you've played for a while.

Check out the forums for more specific info, there are plenty of threads on the best PvP gear, rotation and spec (talent tree points) for every class, the link above being an excellent example.
