Kourage
Something about this game seems to discourage socializing. You can be in a zone with 40 or 60 players, and the General chat is completely silent. You can ask a simple question, and nobody will reply. You can say hello or make a joke, and not even crickets. This has been the case on multiple servers. I don't get it. What is it about this game that makes people not want to chat with other players? Is the story that involving? Is it like watching a movie where you're not allowed to talk? Edited April 5, 2012 by Kourage
Loliaz
Anti-social i'm afraid. I love talking to people in the general chat, whenever your buddies aren't online. There is just low pop on all servers honestly.
Datamonger
One problem is the default chat window has combat stats (not sure of the technical name, the yellow text) mixed in with general chat. So a lot of times, I miss what players are saying when I'm in the middle of a fight, unless I decide to scroll back up and check. I know the default setup can be changed, via separating tabs, but I'm too lazy atm.
Cerion
Frankly, I've found myself putting more and more people on ignore. Had some dude on PvE-RP server last night complaining about lack of PvP on the server. Despite everyone telling him he's on the wrong server for PvP, he continued to be all in our faces with l33t pvp speak. Put him on ignore, but then you get people responding to him...breaks immersion. So I simply closed General chat.

There is just low pop on all servers honestly. It's not the low pop. If there's over 40 people on a planet and in the general chat channel, You would hope 3 of them would want to chat right? Is that too much to ask? 40 something Republic on Taris the other day, and I comment about the scenery. Not a single response. 30 mins later, I ask a question about how the Cyborg social ability works, and nobody responds. During that 30 mins, nobody else had anything to say at all. About 45 mins later I decide to repeat my question and 1 person responded. It's as if everyone is afk or botting.
Anshal
I can only speak for myself, but I sometimes forget SWTOR is an mmo due to the single player feeling you get while questing.
gnetikjakhammer
I don't know what it is either, but it bothers the hell out of me. You don't ever see this in ANY other gaming community. The only logical conclusion I can come to is just: that's how bioware fans are...anti-social. They like socializing and conversing with npcs with the 1-2-3 keys instead of human beings. This is not to say I won't talk to people in games...I often do but I'm playing a game to...play a game. If someone asks a question that I can help with, I answer. If someone needs help with a mob and I'm not in the middle of something, I help but...I'm here to game, not chat.
MightyHalo
people don't socialize anymore really. They are buried in their phones, ignorant to the environment around them.
Opass
I was literally thinking the same thing yesterday. Even on the Republic fleet with 150 people on there are about 10 people engaging in chat. I wouldn't be too surprised if a large majority has turned off General chat to avoid the LFG spam or trolling, etc.(I personally put people on ignore the second I see something about WoW, etc)

Yeah, I usually find myself texting and surfing the net on my phone while playing an MMO over the internet on my PC.

Opass
So if i said WoW that wz was awesome u put me on ignore just kidding haha not quite but if you said, "WoW is better than this game" I would in a heart beat. I might think about it too if you keep calling "Force" "Mana" lol It is a little weird though coming from SWG which was such a social community. RuNuB
General chat on WOW was completely empty as well most of the time. All the chat was on the global trade channel, which is something we don't have.

That said I don't often look at the chat window anyway.
Kourage
Other games have guilds too, and Ventrilo is used with all games. There are no Chuck Norris jokes or other "Barrens" like shenanigans going on, so there's no need to turn off your general chat. WoW actually has "barrens" chat, and you see more people chatting even in zones with much less people in them. None of those excuses cut it. It has to be the nature of the game itself. All the cut-scenes and stories. Perhaps everyone is immersed. That or they're all afk or botting, as I mentioned previously. /shrug

We don't agree with the premise and "the excuses don't cut it". It is not the nature of the game, for me anyway, it is as I said. I don't play games to socialise, I can do that just fine in RL. So...WoW, DAoC, UO, blah blah etc. etc. same way. I don't log in to a game to blather in chat. I come to game.
Goodmonson
99.99999% of anything in General Chat has nothing to do with the game itself. If someone asks a question or needs help sure I will help them. But almost every other question and or anything in general chat is either juvenile in nature or completely off topic. Its not that this game discourages social behavior at all in regards to the chat window. Its just that the majority of the players are in their guild chat with people they know. The lack of Zone Chat or local chat is the problem. If I want silly pointless chat well I can do that at a Bar with friends. I don't need to do it in an MMO. Unfortunately you cannot control the absolute junk and or filth that is screamed or posted in general chat. For that reason most people have general chat turned off. That is the unfortunate side effect of MMO general Chat. If I put everyone who said evil or worthless gibberish in General Chat on my ignore list, then that that is all I would ever be doing. To avoid that I just turn General Chat off. The only things I see are the people who I am running missions with and my guild Chat. I am sure that I am not the only one. ZORG
It may be that while soloing you get more XP and people are just focused on leveling they wanna get as much legacy xp as they can so there not left behind on features when 1.2 hits..
Kourage
And I am not asking you individuals why you choose to chat or not chat, or turn off your chat. The general chat of other MMOs are much more active, even with less players in the zone/channel. I've played on 3 servers here, and the conversations are very rare outside of Fleet or Ilum. Perhaps they're more active on RP or PvP servers?
Roechacca
"Chat Bubbles" That's the reason. We play "Guess who's talking to who" and "Who said that?!" in general chat all day.
Phinion
That is not just this game. There are several other games out that I have played and chat was dead no matter how many people were around. It is the players that make chat live, all any company can do is give us the option to even use a chat channel.
