Hi All,

I have been reading these forums and I have been reading a lot of negativity towards Juggs as DPS and I know to take all I see here with a pinch of salt.

Now onto Tanking, I saw one comment probbably from someone who is clueless but they said that Juggs are also the weakest tank at the moment. Is there any truth in this?

I have a level 25 Jugg and I’m playing as a Tank with a healer friend as we level (planning on staying Tank at 50) and from what I can see so far I can generate enough threat to keep mobs/bosses looking at me BUT when it comes to AoE threat I find the class weak right now. Smash is great but 15 second CD makes me cry inside and I hear it is being increased in the next patch. Ok there might be more AoEs for Juggs in later levels but do these make it easier to pick up adds?

Example, Giant Beast Boss in Athiss. Set up X2 companion DPS (actually better than most random players ;p), Jugg Tank and Sorcerer Healer. When the waves of adds spawn if on one of the waves Smash is on CD it becomes a hopeless mess of an encounter and if we pull through it’s usually only just.

I have a level 50 Vanguard and I leveled it also as a Tank and never had any issues with any aspect of Tanking.

At the moment I find myself constantly switching target frantically trying to hit them hard a couple of times before switching to the next in between going back to the 1st kill main target so I don’t lose it to a DPS.

Will Tanking as a Jugg become more comfotable and methodic and less edge of my seat frantically trying maintain threat on multiple mobs?

my jugg is only, er, 44 atm , been tank spec her whole life. ive also got a 50 healsorc, and 50 sniper, so ive grouped with a few

weak tank ? for pve ? no, not really. they can be very hard to take down, especially with their cooldowns on.

youre 25, i think its around 32-ish, that you get PBAOE taunt. so you end up with; taunt, pbaoe taunt, backhand 4s stun which generates a LOT of aggro, force choke stun, er..think thats it ..

so you get plenty of tools for controlling the fight.

I'm clearing all content sans nightmare right now as a Jugg. I've tanked and dps'd all of it. Juggs are perfectly viable for whatever you want to do. Some classes might have an "easier" time with it but i really enjoy my jugg. I know it might sound crazy, but play what you enjoy playing, not what others tell you is better. I like jugg tanking even though it is a bit more difficult. Not to mention that I get to bounce all over the place with charge/intercede.

Also, remember that this is not WoW, you don't have to have every mob attacking you - trash is easily dealt with by the dps, so the odd escaped trash mob is no problem, just ensure those champs, elites and strongs are bashing your face in and keep the trash only if you easily can. :D

Cheers for the replies. Yeah, I think this is a symptom of using companions for DPS. They can put out the numbers but lack the AI to deal with and control situations. We have them both set on AoE for that encounter and our tactic kinda relies on me having them all hitting me so the splash damage off the boss kills the adds.

TBH as all the mobs on the boss I mentioned are normal toughness I’d probably just leave them for the DPS to sort out. However companions just stand there and get whacked and if they go to the healer the casting push back is a real hindrance.

Oh well, but yeah I really like playing Jugg Tank so not going to change and would be stupid to do so before properly experiencing it with all its abilities.

Thanks

The Beast in Athiss - now that you know those adds are coming, you can make sure you have both Charge, and Smash, ready for them, yes? The Juggernaut doesn't have the short CD, ezmode AE buttons that the other classes do, so knowledge of the fight, and overall awareness/preparedness are more important. True, we have another AE attack that has no CD, but I almost never use it. Most of the time I have used it, was because I fat-fingered it. I just don't need it.

Now, and later, proper use of both Scream, and Retaliation, and to a lesser degree, Choke, will be pivotal in how easy tanking is for you.

As to your final question? No, it will not, and here is why;

Most of the dps in this game do not have good target or ability selection. If they did, tanking (and healing...) would be easier, and Flashpoints would go by much quicker.

Yeah, I do keep Smash especially for the add spawn but have used it to maintain threat on current adds once and subsequently it was on CD for the next spawn which started me thinking.

I use Scream, Choke, Ravage and Retaliation off CD also working in Vicious Slash as I move between targets. I tend to Choke the most annoying mobs with high damage output (and secretly RP while doing it, especially against Jedi ;p). These moves tend to provide the biggest hits, Ravage especially as it hits three times.

TBH after finding that I will get an AoE taunt at 30 this should solve it as the 6 seconds should be enough for Smash to come off CD. I tend to use Smash at the begining of a pack for initial aggro and only during if its a big pull and its taking me a while to work my way round all the mobs.

From what I understand Juggs are the best 1v1 tank in game...dont expect aoe tanking (look at the BH tank for that)

I have tanked 10/10 HM as a Jugg and never had a problem

My Immortal specced Juggernaut's only 30, but so far I've found Vette more enjoyable to work with than Quinn precisely because of the extra practice it affords me while I'm soloing. I'm really getting into a comfort zone with the tool set, managing threat and survival cooldowns while she burns down the mobs. When I show up for a Flashpoint, I've already got hours of practice from the leveling quests - if that helps. Edited by Allegos
