the_nerfherder Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I've leveled one character to 50 and the other to 43, and throughout playing both characters I've come across a lot of people who don't know a thing about Star Wars and came only because they were bored of WoW. So, I was talking about this with a few people in my guild, there are 2 types of people in the game, Star Wars fans who played KOTOR and MMO fans. I got the game cause I played through KOTOR 1 and 2 hundreds of times and I thought this game would sub in for a KOTOR 3 (which it has in most ways.) I think the devs did a good job blending the aspects of KOTOR and an MMO together. But my main question is, what brought you to play the game? Are you a diehard Star Wars fan, or just someone who got tired of WoW?
Listerman Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 (edited) Both. I'm a Star Wars fan, and I came to the glorious realization after five long years that I honestly did not care anymore about the world World of Wacraft takes place in, or the way the game was evolving. TimmyToker Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I'm neither. I only tried KOTOR after playing the beta for SWTOR but i found it too be a clunky mess. Maybe if I had played it when it was new i would have enjoyed it. As for WoW, I downloaded that back when they used to have the 14 day free trial and i could only stomach it for about an hour before i uninstalled it. I play SWTOR because when i heard about it it sounded like a good game. It may have a few flaws but i have been playing the live game since Dec 13th and plan to be here for quite a long time.
Emned Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I'm an MMO fan, a Star Wars fan and a KoTOR fan. So yeah...a KoTOR MMO was high on my wish list. So far I am enjoying myself immensely and can't wait to see what the future brings.
Breati Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Im a KOTOR fan and played WOW alot. I got sick of how wow was quickly grinding out gear peice after peice, horrible quests and rude as can be people on my server. I really liked WOW lore though and am the same for Star Wars and KOTOR lore.
Lazzer Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Both, I played KOTOR and am a huge Starwars fan, I'm also a long time MMORPG fan. The one point that I seem to have a different perspective in than a lot of the MMO fan base is that I have never played WoW and never will so the whole skill tree aspect is new to me, I am left puzzled as to why people feel they need addons and find instanced warzones, Ops and Flashpoints dull mini-games that are placed outside of the actual game.
jerumis Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Well im both. I come from a long line of MMOs UO,EQ,WoW, and more. And I played the living hell out of KoToR 1 and 2. and im a HUGE Star Wars fan.
monkgryphon Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 (edited) I'm playing because I love Star Wars, I loved Knights of the Old Republic, and I love having it all to play with my friends and guild. This is my second MMORPG that I actually played beyond a couple weeks. Been here since first day of early access, and I plan to be here for the years to come. Edited March 25, 2012 by monkgryphon
Tarbacca Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Star Wars is great, and WoW is terrible. I quit WoW to play this sexy game, never going back to that hellhole.
Dark_Hazard Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Huge star wars fan , played all the games and SWTOR just looked very fun and it is!
DieAlteHexe Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I'm neither.... Me either. I was dragged here from another MMO (not WoW, ran screaming from that one back in BC era). I finally agreed to play it simply to shut someone up and found that, despite not being a particular SW fan nor sci-fi fan, I ended up quite enjoying it. Then again, I do love BW stories.
Senatsu Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 The reason I play is because it's a sci-fi MMO, gotten tired of the daggers and shields types. The fact that it's in the Star Wars universe and that BioWare is making it, is just some extra positive points.
FourTwent Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Star Wars is the reason I started playing the game(I continue to play because it's fun), but KoToR did help sway my decision.
notebene Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Never played KOTOR, how does it compare to the first Mass Effect? ME was 'spectacularly' emotionally fullfilling, and draining, at the end. Was KOTOR an M game like ME, or was it more G(ebus gives it two thumbs up!)?
RocketGamer Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Just somebody who got bored of WoW really. However, NOW I'm an avid SW fan
lornalove Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 (edited) Yes, I love KotOR. I count it as my favorite video game. I sometimes wonder how many people have played it and get all the references to it in this game. edit: Oh, I have played quite a few MMOs, but not in a couple of years. I guess it was mostly the KotOR that drew me, and the MMO was the added bonus. Edited March 25, 2012 by lornalove
Azumio Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 (edited) No. They butchered that story. Revan looked like a ***** being held like that, then getting owned in the Foundry, and he's the only connection to KOTOR . I'm still playing because my sub hasn't run out and no new MMORPGs have landed right now. I'm half tempted to check back into Aion and roll a Ranger, but ********n I hated that games PvP. Also that it's "spacey". Not so much Sci-Fi, but rather an MMORPG that incorporates space into the game. I like that. Despite it being so horribly done and adding nothing to the game Edited March 25, 2012 by Azumio
btsager Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I never really played KOTOR. I tried it out briefly but didn't get into it. I do know a lot about star wars though because I enjoy reading. I don't think you need to know the story though to enjoy the game. Even if all you know is the movies, the game still relates.
Kaphik Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 What about MMO players who are Star Wars fans who have also played KOTOR, as well as every other Star Wars game?
pyrobot Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Both. I'm a Star Wars fan, and I came to the glorious realization after five long years that I honestly did not care anymore about the world World of Wacraft takes place in, or the way the game was evolving. It's hard to care about the swtor world though, especially with how seperated zones are, and how *********** whiney NPC's are. I swear, if 1.2 hits and I have to listen to more than 10 dialogues to start the new dailies and the new op. I'll *********** quit.
MysticTrunks Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 All and none. Love Star Wars... read/audiobook all the books save for a handful here and there that slip by. Loved KOTOR as well and I'm a fan of BIOWARE thanks to their work there and Mass Effect. That all said, I also love the game itself. It has flaws but a lot of them that are my least favorite are 1.2 fixed and other things like housing (ships) and guild halls are on the pipeline. I also RP and a game like this is just great fun to RP in. I said from the days of SWG, if ever make a MMO based in the Tales of the Jedi (Comics with Nomi Sunrider) period, it would be a far bigger success.... so long as Raph Koster is kept the hell away from it. So far, I'm happy and plan to be around for years to come.
Lord_Scythe Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I am a huge Star Wars fan. I was very young when I saw the original movie and it was my first movie in a Theater. I am a huge Bioware fan. I have been hooked on their games since the Original Baldur's Gate. I am also an MMO gamer. I was a hardcore EQ gamer and then a casual WOW player. I have found a happy medium in SWTOR.

Despite it being so horribly done and adding nothing to the game I do understand why the spoiler part upsets you. It's a let down. The whole story was kind of ruined for me years ago anyway when somebody decided we needed a "canon" version of that character. I do still enjoy some other things they've added in to this game. Just for a couple of non-spoilery examples, the whole Taris story line on the Republic side, or the cult quest on the Empire side.
